…

lol imagine lol

This requires some patience as it's a pretty long interview, but Martin Quinn is so down to earth and relaxed throughout, and at around 11:00 he gives the best possible answers to the Martin's Scotty and James Doohan's Scotty differences in accent, appearance and age.

Ok I jumped right to the part you mentioned and love his answers. I should watch the whole thing though. We were lucky to get him as Scotty.

The logic of Scott's accent diminishing over years in an environment where almost everyone he interacts with speaks with American accents is sound. I've seen that happen with people, as well as experiencing it in myself.

One of my daughters has lived in the UK since the early part of the century, first in London and now in Derry. I wouldn't say she speaks in a British or Irish accent, but she definitely no longer sounds at all like an American raised in Maryland.

When my granddaughter spends several weeks in Maryland, her Irish accent fades some. And of course snaps back to her normal almost immediately back home.

This stuff is mostly unconscious picking up of behavioral cues from the social setting you're navigating, IMO.

That happened with a Trinidadian friend of mine as well as my British sister-in-law. I hope neither felt they had to adapt, though my sister-in-law made a joke of it whenever----and ONLY whenever--she talked to her mother in a crowd.

Trek has largely gone with the American style of medical education, a 4 year MD degree after undergrad. However, in many parts of the world, medical doctors have a 6 year degree after high school. M'Benga taking this route and shaving 2 years off when he can start being called a doctor (he's already a doctor per the footage in Orders of Magnitude on the USS Constitution) might go a long way towards making sense of his already complicated timeline. If he's a doctor as early as 24, the Battle of Zeta Reticuli could be 2247. Shave off a year by adding that he's a "prodigy" or whatever, and you could put the battle at 2246, right when James T. Kirk is at Tarsus IV (that's assuming that all references to "the war" in SNW are a broad reference to the general hostilities with the Klingons and not the actual Discovery war).

Or since the "20 years" line in Conscience of the King may have been a rounding anyway, the timeline might still work even without shaving more years off M'Benga's medical education.
