I thought this episode was perfectly average. Not the worst episode (Still goes to Vitus Reflux) and not the best (Last week or the Tribute to Sisko episode) but it was what it was. It was a lot of relationship plots and Star Trek doesn't really do relationships all that well. I guess from that perspective it was very "young adult". Also, I think the Genesis storyline would have been a good season 2 storyline, in that we barely know about the character where the revelations on this fear thing she was holding in seemed kind of out of the blue. What we have seen from Genesis is someone who took charge and was fun to be around. I never saw someone who was "living in the shadows" as this episode seemed to imply (To me at least). Also, considering this is the end of the season, having something like the command track for her would have put her on a journey to last a while in this series. The episode ended with back to the status quo. Sometimes I feel like the characters are just running in place, and I was bummed they took that direction with Genesis, who was actually my favorite character after the first three episodes. She still is pretty cool, but I guess I'm asking, what now.

So... There are handheld devices that can create portals between planets?

Wow... Where were those things during the 120 years of galaxy wide darkness...

They mentioned it had to do with something something moon, but yeah.

Yeah, but even if it was just the moon to anywhere else that's still enough to make a hub location capable of holding a significant portion of the galaxy together.

Which assumes they want to be that. They're a new species and maybe only made contact after the Federation was reformed.

Well... This episode proves they aren't a species of sociopaths so it's kind of hard for me to believe they wouldn't want to save the however many trillions of lives must have died due to the sudden cessation of high warp travel across most of the galaxy.

As to being a new species, nope.

Remember, there's barely any Dilithium left in the galaxy outside of that one planet hidden away in the nebula. Which means according to Discovery's logic new species aren't going to be able to pop up with warp drives.

There's still space travel and empires like the Emerald Chain. Hell, Book has a Slipstream Drive..

As for what I thought this episode:

I actually thought they were setting up a love triangle with Caleb and Genesis, and I'm not sure I'm happy they avoided it because I think the two actors have a lot more chemistry than Tarima and Caleb. I also was disappointed that Caleb didn't mention the fact that B'Avi died to save him.

I am not sure how I feel about Genesis being driven by fear but I get it was an attempt to say she is forced by expectations, just like Darem. Except I think the message of the episode fell flat because I much better Darem who actually wanted to make people happy. He seemed like a much better person than our Darem.

I actually quite enjoyed this one. I like the quiet episodes after a devastating episode. So to me, it felt like the episode after BOBW2 (Family), not in specific plot lines, just the calm after the storm sense.

I quite enjoyed Darem and Jay'Den together. I like that Jay'Den acknowledging he didn't really know Darem that well, but they did make him look good, but of course he's an asshole to Kyle as soon as he gets back lol.

Regardless of what Genesis did, I still like her. I agree that her and Caleb have a lot of chemistry and I like seeing them together. But just because people have chemistry you don't have to pair them off. People can have platonic chemistry. It's fine if Caleb and Genesis just stay friends.

This episode was okay. I think probably the best of the bunch so far in that it at least stands on its own unlike the DS9 episode.

And maybe it's because the show has basically no room to breathe, but it really does feel like someone took the writing 101 course for character development and decided that every character needs to have a single flaw to balance out being the awesomest person otherwise. You basically have two nepobabies with deep singular character flaws, but also Caleb is a teen superhacker that can defeat all Federation security with his mommy issues, and I guess SAM is a kind of nepobaby as well... I think Jay-Den is probably the only normal one of the bunch without any super special skillset. He's the Jubilee of this group I guess.

But otherwise... it's fine. A character episode with some lore building, but nothing really fancy because unlike something like Family, I don't really feel the trauma that any of these characters are supposed to be experiencing.

Also I guess it's funny that deep down inside, Darem is an asshole and he's tricked everyone at home into thinking he's not. lol

One nitpick is that assuming semesters are like American colleges given all the other Americanisms, it's kind of funny that they've only been there for 4 months? Imagine taking a semester of Physics and being told to provide a theory of Quantum Gravity because that's what the Miyazaki exam felt like.

The "modernisms" still bother me but I guess it's more funny now. Somehow after a nuclear war, the Burn, and who knows what else happened on Earth, Ibiza is still overrun with shitty British tourists in ugly shirts. Also fuck Duluth I guess. lol

Song at the end is We Watch the Stars by Fink.

Really does feel like I’m watching early episodes of Smallville sometimes.
Yeah, this one in particular. lol

4 months, then all the students goes on break, that feels like a 'Between Trimesters Break'.
Salvaging the Mizayaki, even as a controlled test, seems like a lot for a bunch of first semester students even if these are the most gifted children in the galaxy. Also I'm not sure how gym class, debate class, physics class, and a class on Sisko is meant to help prepare for that test. lol

What I liked I did like a lot. It was a little on the slow and disconnected side this week and I'm tempted to give it no more than a 6, but Jay-Den was the MVP of the episode and while the story didn't really win me over it didn't bore me, either. A soft 7 on the strength of the Jay-Den scenes and Reno.

Which is OK in a 20+ episode season, with only 10 episodes they cannot really afford to put on the brakes, imo.

They kinda destroyed the character imo. Falsifying records is a crime that can land one behind bars for years. Furthermore, she knew that Caleb was someone who had spent a good portion of his life in prison and was trying to get his life in order and she manipulates him into helping her with her own crime, which could have easily destroyed everything he worked for. A terrible person actually. She compromised Ake as well, since not reporting her would be a career ending decision for her as well.

Yeah I felt Jay-Den was the standout here.
