Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Jeez, everyone's pissed off on the interwebs about this:

I can't believe that in-universe all the commanders sit on the edge of their seats, muscles tense, staring at the primary screen for hours on end in silence while the ship warps, ready for any unexpected event.

Maybe they forget that in other series, we only see our heroes when something happens. Although I would have loved a TNG episode where the Enterprise, in real time, warps for an hour and nothing happens. The characters chat about this and that to pass the time, and Picard reads some archaeology book and takes notes.
I doubt anyone important is on the bridge when the ship is in lengthy warp flight. Picard would have been sat in his ready room, Riker would have been in Holodeck 2, Deanna would be doing some counselling, Worf shouting at Alexander, leaving just Data on the bridge at a pinch.

'Disaster' is a good example of what it's probably usually like. Lt Noname is sat in the chair.
Sure they do! And everyone knows it’s only a real captain when he’s carrying a swagger stick and always has a nail file on him. ;)

My understanding is that,in real life, the captain is rarely on the bridge. Maybe rarely is the incorrect word. The captain has too many duties and responsibilities to spend time sitting on the bridge staring off into space.

The simplest answer is that Anke needn't be captain. Of course, the creators want to eat their cake have it too. Can't be Star Trek without a starship going off on adventures and can't have our big name star be subordinate to anyone other than Vance.
Or maybe she just loves reading a good book, in a comfortable armchair, while stars and galaxies scroll by on the screen!
We would see Picard reading in his Ready Room all the time. As the Athena doesn't seem to have a Ready Room for Ake to read in, I'm really not seeing the difference.

In real life Admiral Spruance was known to leave the bridge of his flagship and go to his quarters and take a nap during lulls in combat, because he wanted to be alert as possible when battle did occur and he also had utmost confidence in his subordinates in handling situations that didn't require him to be on the bridge.

Janeway was reading a book on irish poetry on the bridge when she got involved with the Michael hologram. The DS9 crew frequently sat around gossiping on the bridge of the Defiant. So there is precedence for starfleet crews relaxing during lulls in missions.

The minute Ake was notified of the Anomaly she went into Captain mode. It's not like she said 'Hang on Ensign Weldu, let me just finish this page and I'll be right with you.'

Maybe the haters will be happier if Ake starts using a 32nd century kindle.

The haters will not be happy until Academy ceases production.

I am not. Like mentioned before Trek has the whole military structure to it. People expect Captains to be rigid and series. Trying something new is not exactly going to be embraced unless people love it. My theory is she would be facing less criticism if they had made her just the dean of college and didn't also try and make her a Starship Captain also. In fact I that kind of makes sense for conflict. The ship is controlled by Starfleet officers who were trained by the war college. They get in conflict with the teachers who are not exactly comfortable outside of their classrooms. Basically the Trek version of nerds vs jocks.

Kelrec grew up in the Federation's ruins so he's very much of the, "We're the last best defense of what passes for civilization."

Which is a different creature from those who grew up in the post-apocalypse galaxy.

Or in Fallout terms:

* Kelrec is a Vault dweller
* The students of Starfleet Academy are Wastelanders

come to think of it star trek starfleet academy is in a way kinda like fallout

We need a "I'm not a regular Captain, I'm a cool Captain ..." GIF

I actually think that is what Caleb is set up to be. He has lots of action man to him that you sort of expect out of a Captain. I think that is why he is the shows lead. Holly Hunter is basically there to be the adult parent figure that gets him to reach his full potential. While his friends also become his brothers and sisters.

I just realised we've yet to see a 32nd century Reman on either Discovery or Academy. There was no mention of them being on Ni'var at all, maybe they didn't join in with the unification.

No Aenar either but there were so few of them it could be they've just gone extinct outside of hybrids.

Remans joined up with the Discovery Klingons and flew away into the great unknown, never to be seen again!

As the Klingons in Discovery are the same as the Klingons in every other show I can only surmise you are under the impressions Klingons and Remans both vanished in 2258. However they show up in various properties set in later time periods so I'm afraid your theory cannot be correct.

They're really not the same Klingons, as Lower Decks highlighted.
