i really hate how the fandom seems to have split between the people open minded to SFA, and the 'we want Legacy' types. I support all Trek .
I wouldn't say no to a Legacy show if they gave it to us, but it also feels like some fans just can't move on. They can't move on from TOS or TNG. I'm ready to give some new characters and a new century a chance. Trek is about going forward
The weight question is actually a sort of continuation, though often in a more mean spirited approach to the old debate about why Picard was bald. The idea is with Trek tech and medical advantages that people in the future should all basically be perfect in every way. Like Greek Gods almost.
To be fair this kind of question was brought into the picture when Roddenberry decided the future was going to be a Utopia in TNG. So ever since then the writers have either had to ignore it or write around it using tech like Geordi's visor or Kirk being allergic to that medicine meaning he needs to uses glasses or being able to clone whole body part replacements like Nogs leg.
Mostly I think people when they like the Trek they watching will ignore any nitpicky stuff like that. But when they don't like something they will use anything to try and criticize it. Now that politics and art are connected they will really go hard and mean spirited in their attacks.

the negativity is really getting to me too. It makes it impossible for me to go on social media at the moment. Except for this site, where we can at least discuss the show in a more fair and balanced way. I am liking what i'm seeing , mostly, so far , and i am glad i'm not alone

What I have noticed is people don't like Political correctness but they have also grown sick and tired of the anti-woke constant complaining as well. They have noticed they complain for the sake of views and thus aren't doing it in good faith. But people don't like lots of things and still engage in it because social media is like a drug addiction. People can't stop, even if they know it's also making them feel miserable.
When one has been angry for long it becomes comfortable.
I wouldn't really say those sorts of things connect back to the whole "Utopia" idea.
It's more that real life is on track to do those things, so the only way those solutions wouldn't be readily available 400 years in the future is if the setting itself was a rather extreme dystopia.
There's a difference between people:
- Not liking it because they don't think it's good
- Not liking it because it's not what they wanted from a Trek show
- Not liking it because they're bigots and are actively fighting culture wars
It matters because anyone not aware of that context who looks the show up with a view to watching it will be deterred. That the show's chances of success and ultimately damages Trek's future.
I always had it in my head canon that Starfleet Command was located on the grounds of The Presidio, on the south side of the Golden Gate Bridge, and Starfleet Academy was on the north side located on the grounds of Camp Baker.

Then the ship rotates 180 degrees to land and face south toward San Francisco and the Presidio, which is where Starfleet Command is located.
I am staking my claim to a prediction that in the finale that the Athena will get into a firefight and Discovery will jump in to assist
Not sure how I’d feel about that, but sure, there’s a possibility that they show up. There was this interview with Kurtzman a few weeks ago where he said something to the effect of wanting everyone from Discovery at least once on Starfleet Academy. And then there was this photo of Sonequa Martin-Green visiting Kerrice Brooks on the set of Starfleet Academy, which could theoretically have been made during the filming of such a cameo.
Her name’s Yashere.
In ENT we see that the Earth Starfleet Command building is next to Horseshoe Bay, so I'm guessing unless the new Federation decided to locate its Starfleet Command in a totally different area near the Golden Gate Bridge that it's still more or less in that same location?

I do wonder how often the Athena will take off and land throughout the series to facilitate such a thing.
Horseshoe bay is in Marin County, on the grounds of old Fort Baker, north side of the bay and just south of Sausalito. That is where the Academy ship landed.
Starfleet Headquarters is still located at Federation HQ station. At one point in 'Beta Test' Vance gets told he has a priority 1 (or similar) message from FHQ.
I think it's implied by Betazed becoming the new Federation capital and Earth hosting Starfleet Academy, that the new Federation is keen to be much more decentralised than the old one. In light of what happened during the Burn it makes sense the new Federation would not want to put all it's eggs in one basket and choose not to have Starfleet Command on a core planet
There was some of the 3rd in 1987. Many derogatory stuff related to the shot of the crewman in the Skant.
Homophobia was around (still is today) in 1987.
Also plenty of homophobia was directed at DS9 when 'Rejoined' aired.
