f the Daughter had to have her telepathy suppressed, then the same is probably true for her parents and children. What's with Dad taking that broach off his neck at the end? Was that also an inhibitor?
The father is played by a IRL Deaf Actor.
The broach is a artificial Speech Generator, that's why his voice was dubbed over.
When he took off the broach, he said "Yeah" with his IRL voice.

And the Father is a Empath, the daughter is the opposite, she's too powerful so she needs a Neural Inhibitor to dampen her powers.
In his family lineage, powers must've skipped a generation, the father didn't get much besides being a Empath.
The Daughter is Uber Powerful.
The Son seems to be a normal Empath from what we can tell.

Better than the premiere, for sure.

The slang and the teen-ness of it are not things I like particularly. Nor the Number One. Nor The Doctor so far. Something has to be up there. Waitingvforcthat shoe to drop. Same with Caleb's mom, you don't hire Tatiyana fir that little peak.

But Holly Hunter is great. I like episodic. And the show looks good. The Betazoid cadet is interesting (being only empathic with the inhibitor) and choosing War College (at daddy's request, I bet). The Klingon Doctor cadet is also an interesting idea. And the SAM/Doctor dynamic.

Moving HQ to Betazoid is a great idea.

The idea that a Jem Haddar/Klingon would be suoer strong does not make a lot of sense to me, as neither are, IIRC. Ditto Tellarite/Klingon. Did Iiss something there.

watched second episode of SFA and enjoyed it even more this time.

What I'm liking is that they're giving the characters room to breathe. It's not all high stakes 'must save the world' every week, like Disco or Picard. What I loved about Trek as a kid is that i could just 'chill' with the characters for an hour. It was a future that looked like one i'd like to live in.

And SFA is getting back to that hopeful vision of the future, i think. It looks like a universe i'd like to live in.

I am liking the characters, I just hope they soften some of Caleb's rough edges as the season goes on. His hostility towards Starfleet is understandable, i just hope he warms to them by the end.

I also hope for more of the other cadets. Genesis, Sam, Jay'den didn't have much to do in this episode.

I really like Tarima. She's very likeable. The actress is from Melbourne, Australia, like me (!) so that certainly helps.

Overall, i am enjoying the world building, characters, episodic structure, the more hopeful future, and I love all the easter eggs, returning species, and the Lower Decks and Prodigy references are amazing. Good stuff, keep it coming! I gave it an 8 in my initial review , but might upgrade it to a 9

Why?

This isn't the "good" Starfleet we know from previous shows. It would be perfectly valid for him to be the match that burns the whole thing down to start over.

And before someone tries to argue that the current Starfleet can be saved, it really can't. Because it's being run by a secret cabal that bypasses both the Federation President and Commander in Chief.

The Illuminati are real!

That's what happens when writers don't think of just what it means to have someone bypassing all chain of command to hand out secret orders to Starfleet captains.
I mean, the Federation has organized and planned structured societies since TOS. It doesn't surprise me.

i only noticed that on my second watch. That the father is a IRL deaf actor. I thought it was a really great moment when he takes off the interpreter pin and says Yeah in his real voice

These two episodes have done a great job at presenting quite a good amount of humour but built to very emotionally evocative finales. The landing scene in episode 1 and the diplomatic resolution in this one I confess stirred me greatly. So classically Trek.

Academy is based on this sample size thus far a Discovery, DS9, Lower Decks tribrid and I couldn't be happier. If these two seasons and the final seasons of SNW are to be the end of the Prime Universe (at least until someone else comes along and de-boots back) then it's a ride I'm happy to see through and it will be a high note to go out.

And the torch will be passed back to STO for me to get my fix.

They're not from Earth, some just lived on Earth at various points in time.
Spock did describe as living among "other humans" that implies they are an Earthborn race. Pelia has also only ever referenced her time on Earth as far back as Pythagaros and not once brought up a homeworld. They have never been referred to as visiting Earth, refugees on Earth just living there. While absence of evidence is not evidence of absence the suggestion that they are from Earth has more going for it than them being from elsewhere.

You need to get some fresh air or something, man seriously. It's really not that deep. Kovich/Daniels gave out orders on a need to know basis, but it's shown that Starfleet Officers undertaking a Red Directive mission are still answerable to both the CinC and the Federation President if shit goes wrong on said mission.
