Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

I actually find it very believable that there would be older ensigns. Or more to the point, older cadets.

Even now, you find people in their 30s or 40s attending college. Is it that unrealistic to think there are people out there in the Federation who didn't decide to join Starfleet until they were older? Or even simply didn't have the skills or knowledge to pass the entrance exams until later in life?

Frankly, there SHOULD be some older cadets in ACADEMY, particularly since it's opening up for the first time in over a century.

(That was something that always bugged me, though. Where did all the Starfleet officers train if the Academy was not open for over 100 years? Where did Vance or Rayner train to become Starfleet officers if not the Academy?)

The United Earth Starfleet from 2132 to 2161 didn't have an Academy per se. There was Starfleet Training, a four-year program to graduate new Starfleet officers to serve aboard early ships, but no dedicated institution or campus.

As much as I wanted to see a show about Starfleet Academy, I can't say I ever thought about me attending it, or even being in Starfleet. For the most part, I don't think I ever fantasized about being in any sort of fictional world. I thought maybe it would be cool to have superpowers, but not even my beloved X-Men appealed to me in that way.

I thought about being the captain of a starship when I was a kid all the time. Yup. But as an adult im much more serious. Much more cultured. I think about being a fleet captain instead.

any word on a third season yet? I hope it gets one, that will piss off the haters

Its too early. The show will have to be a huge success to get a 3rd. Paramount is in trouble. They are belt tightening.
To my mind, referring to Discovery as STD or even ST: D indicates a low level of emotional maturity that tends to say a lot about the poster in question. Trolling at its most trollish.

The show is called Star Trek Discovery. STD are the initials and easier to type. Im not seeing the problem here.

Absolutely not.

Had that been evident in the Original STAR TREK (it never was; that shift came when GR tried to completely re-envision Star Trek with ST: TNG - which doesn't have many episodes I now find rewatchable - and his depiction in TNG of 'perfect' interchangeable and well adjusted mannequin like characters) - I wouldn't have continued watching it.

Utopia wasn't what drew me to watch or enjoy STAR TREK at all.

I actually enjoy those early tng episodes. I applaud roddenberry for trying it. The characters still managed to be quite effective at solving problems. Berman got a bit out of those lanes but it still felt closer to what roddenberry wanted than today's trek

"I would eat my own face than watch Starfleet Academy. Like take a razor blade and cut pieces of my face off."

- Mike Stoklasa (aka Mr Plinkett)
Pretty sure though that Mike has checked out of Trek after Discovery and Picard and hasn’t even given Strange New Worlds a fair shake. That is of course his right and completely fine. I actually think it’s the mature thing to just recognize that a show might not be for you and then not watch it, as opposed to the many YouTube personalities who earn their money by hate-watching Trek to post scathing reviews afterwards. It’s a shame though that he apparently didn’t at least sample Strange New Worlds, since I reckon it should be more along the lines of the kind of Trek he enjoys. But it is what it is.

His Star Wars prequel and Star Trek reviews are pretty legendary though. And the channel has put out a lot of fun Star Trek material over the years like their Star Trek trivia game show.
And they're awful. They are not the evidence of good or bad media they are treated as. The extreme hyperbolic violent rhetoric reflects that.

Hatewatching is what keeps a lot of YT accounts active and filled with new content.
Sadly. Imagine spending energy on things you actually like.

He'll be watching every episode,

He'll review it. Let's be honest here. We are all going to watch it. We'll watch all the episides even if we think it stinks.

Yeah. Those star wars prequel reviews were great. He does have a lot of great star trek content. He really loves star trek especially tng.

I dont think all of us hate watch. When im watching trek that I feel stinks I optimistically think its going to get better. It happened in season 3 of Picard. I cant stand the first two seasons but season 3 I really enjoyed. Im hoping the academy show will be good. So even if the first episode stinks ill stick with it. I will whine and complain about it though. Whining and complaining about bad trek is a trekkers birthright in my opinion. Lol

Which is becoming the stupidest thing to me when people want change in STAR TREK. Don't support a product if you want it to change!

People baffle me. This isn't even first world problems anymore but zero world problems, were expending energy on something I don't like is considered positive! 😵‍💫
