Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

Kirk - 2
God - 0
Kirk: I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain.

Spock: Captain, are you aware of the Gnostic belief that God, who they named Yaldabaoth, actually feeds from the pain of people? In which case, by refusing to have your pain taken away, you are actually helping the being at the center of the galaxy?

Kirk: :(

For such a great distance, for the universe it is still only considered in our local group of galaxies.
I plotted the probable trajectory in the episode (in yellow), based on our current understanding of the universe.

I'm guessing the two galaxies travelled through are satellite galaxies of Andromeda (And. II & And. III).

Nice galactic map. Where did you get it?

McCoy: Jim, did you just forget everything we learned in school? There's a supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy!

Spock: I attempted to warn Sybok of this, but he did not listen.

(Enterprise is crushed by the black hole gravity and everyone is killed. McCoy however escapes in an escape pod to maintain continuity with his TNG appearance)

Roll credits

Unlike what Discovery's finale would have you believe, subspace fields, like the type that constantly surround Federation ships, are proven to make a joke of the event horizon of black holes.

I think Trek fans believe in emotions. But Trek fans really love characters who are stoic. Part of the military aspect of Star Trek so many fans love.

I don't really like stoicism.

Not a fan of in real life. Though I admit I do have issues with opening up at times when I don't want to be a burden on my family. With fictional characters I think it works well, but I am someone who thinks shows work best when you have variety of personality types on the show. Great source of conflict and as we know conflict is great for both drama and comedy.

With Star Trek I think it's biggest issue in this regard is people see being stoic as being mature and professional. When you get down to it that was always the biggest issue on Discovery with Burnham crying and everyone always bantering in a comic way. Or being touchy feely. People have a hard time seeing people in a military acting like that as being professional. People like it when characters are addressed by their rank and all the yes sir's and my a speak freely and someone telling a character they need to not let their personal feelings impact their judgment. Lots of fans like how rigid the characters can be.
