Started the episode. Interesting theme sequence going back to Star Trek's theme. Did I miss an episode or why is La'An wearing a monitor?

Star Trek theme, TNG Holodeck. Paying Tribute to DS9's Our Man Bashir. I wonder what the Voyager tribute will be.

Kinda eye rolled when they had Spock specifically say that Arthur Conan Doyle was his ancestor. That felt unnecessary.

Did anyone else notice the device La’an had on her neck at the beginning before she jumped into the Holodeck? I wonder what’s going on with that?

I was originally thinking Our Man Bashir. Now I'm thinking Elementary, Dear Data, especially La'An's challenge to have the holodeck challenge her.

This episode feels kinda meta.

I wasn't really a fan of this episode. I think I can go back to my original statement of this show being like Our Man Bashir, but the ending was too exposition-heavy to feel like the rest of the episode was worth it. Also, the scene with Uhura talking about Star Trek and basically saying everything I've heard at conventions in the past was kind of eye rolling. Yeah, it's a good message, but when you've heard the same thing for 10+ years, to actually see it in an episode of Star Trek felt like a (To borrow a phrase from when I first got to this board when people were talking about TNG) "sledgehammer to the head."

I hope next week we actually do get an episode of Star Trek where they have a mystery to solve, or a nebula to explore, or heck I can take some time travel. Basically, something that doesn't feel as gimmicky as this episode felt.

By the way, if I were to suggest a tribute to Voyager, Pike and his Hair in the holodeck reminded me of Brannon Braga, maybe a little more crazed.

Overall, this one was okay. Not really all that spectacular in terms of "trapped in the holodeck"-type stories, especially since they really didn't do much with the holodeck safeties being disabled other than use it as a momentary misdirect. The murder mystery wasn't bad, though a bit run-of-the-mill for the genre.

EDIT: I just realized La’an’s cheek getting cut by a glass shard and realizing the holodeck safeties are disabled is something I did in an episode of my fic series a couple years ago. I did get a kick outta the parallel thoughts hitting on the same idea.

We got some nice performances from Anson, Wesley, and Jess in their alter egos. Kinda funny that Babs didn't really try at doing a different accent at all in the simulation.

Scotty's B-plot was probably the most memorable part of the whole thing. I'm liking this arc they're working on with him this season where he's trying to learn to trust his instincts and figure out how to work with others.

Una taking Ortegas off the suspension list this quickly after last week's episode kinda undercut that moment a bit. You're telling me that no one else aboard the ship could've piloted? I get the move was to highlight the danger of the situation, but they should've put this episode maybe in the 5th slot for the season.

Rating this one a 6.

What a terrible episode. It took a shit all over The Original Series while also having a Holodeck episode that somehow managed to be worse than ds9's James Bond parody, although to be fair still better than Voyagers Irish stereotypes or Jane Austen holodeck stuff. But by the end I still would rather watch even episodes like the big goodbye or A Fistful of datas, which weren't great but are still somehow less obnoxious and better written.

What an absolutely miserable experience. 1/10, probably a top three worst strange new worlds episode along with the Freaky Friday and Spock becomes a full Human episodes

Aaaand Spock directly said he’s related Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

When I watched ST VI, I always liked the ambiguity that Spock could have been related to Sherlock Holmes.

Like, Trek & Sherlock Holmes being a stealth shared universe (of course that would not work with Data's holodeck adventures - I don't think they were "historical re-enactments" - but hell I loved the idea).

Well, I guess if the *Enterprise* (in Lower Decks Pakled voice) recommends against implementing the holodeck on starships, it really does get shelved for many decades

Man, Leila Kalomi's going to be so ticked when the reason Spock rejected her in 2261 wasn't because of his Vulcan upbringing but because he was too busying jumping from Chapel to La'an and Surak knows who else during this time.

Garbage.

Hated it start to finish.

They weren't paying any sort of homage to the original Star Trek series here or the 1960s.

A collection of bad tropes strung together and more laughing at the era then trying to show it in any sort of laugh with us parody.

This is the first time I've ever actually felt insulted by an episode of Star Trek.

And as far as the story on the actual ship:

The Prototype Holodeck doesn't have a shutdown switch? They never really explain why Scotty can't just effectively unplug the damn thing.

And talk about ridiculously bad science. The real danger is that they have to avoid a gamma radiation burst; except for the fact that such a burst would fill the entire star system area and not come out like a flat wave of energy?

And the sad thing is it looks like they spent a lot of money on one time use sets here.

And a scripted 'blooper reel' sequence at the end?

Spare me.

If they meant this is some sort of homage to the original Star Trek of the '60s, for me they really missed that target by a light year.

YMMV.

It was alright. I liked the leg over the chair joke. Beyond that the only thing of note was the La'an and Spock thing. I feel their digging too deeply into "fun" episodes and avoiding heavier stuff.
