Spinoff....

Paul Wesley's Kirk doesn't resonate with me.

What I really want, is a full-on Star Trek reboot. No continuity, a completely fresh start and a serious take with new writers, producers and directors. And less quips.
Nope.

And put me down as having no interest in a post-TOS premise.

I think “Year One” discourse is going to be an interesting case study in the various types of fandom chatter. Because you’ve got the “Legacy” stuff, which has three distinct groups:

  • “Hell yes.”
  • “Hell no.”
  • “Hell yes, but not for the memberberries.” (Myself.)
With “Year One”, my early read on the fanbase is that things are more muted in both directions:
  • “Okay, sure.”
  • “I dunno. Nah.”
There’s less passion here. Which kind of makes it a nonstarter to some extent. I made the thread on this over on the Future Trek board, and like, I’m not surprised by that, either.

From a business sense, it’s probably savvy for Goldsman to have gotten this out right now rather than closer to Strange New Worlds’ series finale. And perhaps excitement will build over time. But right now, I’m not sure the initial reaction to the notion is quite where he and Alonso Myers might have hoped. It’s telling that there’s yet to be any discernible galvanization around it from any corner of the net that I’ve researched.

As I've said before, I'd actually really like to see someone rework classic TOS episodes with fresh scripts (and maybe some story changes as well). I'd just love to see existing stories readapted, and how they might be different from the 1960s versions.

That seems to be anathema in Trek fandom, though.

Not anethema so much to me as personal preference I'd just rather see a new stories.

I'm not a fan of remakes as shallow cash grabs or anything, but reinterpretations of stories that are already known have a long and storied history. Witness how many of Shakespeare's plays were historical dramas, for example. Or how "feminist retellings" of Greek mythological stories are perennial favorites.

Not to be obvious, but new stories are only good if they're good. Frankly, there are a finite number of stories that work within the Star Trek format, with most of the possible variance due to the individual character dynamics. And given we're talking about using a set of characters who is well-defined by the TOS era, I'm not sure just having Kirk/Spock/McCoy banter on yet another away mission is really going to sell it.

Year One in concept sounds like if they did a Superman series with the cast of Smallville after that series ended. Which is something I wanted to see with those characters and visuals. There was a comic series that ran for a bit, but the art was all over the place, and still, a live action series would've been preferable.

I have little interest in a series with Seven and the nepobabies.

Just go full post TMP with a new 5 year mission. They can even bring Anson in as Admiral Pike who got cured but then is recruited into Section 31 so his recovery is kept secret (thus Lower Decks still thinking he ends up on Talos IV per the crossover episode)

I really hope this doesn't happen. I've nearly had my fill of prequels. We all wanted a Legacy show set in the 25th century. Continuing in that timeline would be better.
Unlike many here, I'd be interested in watching Legacy. Thanks to TNG and particularly DS9, I'm much more vested in that timeframe than the 32nd century.

It's apparent that Legacy isn't happening though. That ship has sailed so it's time to move on.

Fortunately, I do love the idea of ST: Year One!

If any ST series has a chance of being picked up at this point, it's Year One. Name recognition of Kirk and Spock. The social footprint seems to be the largest for TOS. After all, which era did JJ go with for his movies? Plus standing sets!

That doesn't mean it's going to happen for sure but I can see it being one of the few premises that could work given the financial climate.

We shall see! It'll be interesting.
