Spinoff....

This strikes me as similar, if not quite as pleading, as Matalas wanting Star Trek: Legacy. They're essentially asking the fans to create enough buzz to give them more wor...I mean, allow their creative dreams to come true.

I think the author of the article forgets that Checkov wasn't around during Kirk's first year. I guess he could have been a lower decker that we never got to see. And then, of course, there's Kahn's recognition of him in TWOK, but still...

The difference being since the card was filmed in Los Angeles, they'd either have to have shipped all the Picard interior ship sets to Canada; or rebuild them from scratch.

If they green lit a new Kirk series; they can use the standing SNW sets they already have.

I hate everything about the TMP era except the exterior of tge refit.
Otoy love the ship inside and out and they are digitally mapping the entire ship. This could be a plus to shows using that version, although more likely they would 'modernise' everything.

TMP had some great ideas - the bio-belts became the TNG comm badges and were retconned into Discovery; they evened up the numbers of men and women; they introduced multiple alien species into the crew; they validated accurate speeds and distances; they revamped sick bay and engineering; gave us bumpy-headed Klingons; Vulcan mysticism; Rand free to kill again.

A significant part of the dislike stems from the uniforms, which could have looked much more unifom-like, but the basic design has been refined in other iterations. The design was re-used as dress uniforms in Into Darknes, and the white uniforms worn by Chapel and Culber have a strong TMP vibe. I think the uniforms could definitely be salvaged with shoulder pads, two-tone uniforms, sleeker buckles, and black shoes.

I'd be happy to let the TOS era stand with what we've got - the hundred or so episodes (including TAS), the six movies and the Generations prologue.

If they really must do TOS, I'd prefer to see them do something set in one of the "unseen" time periods - the end of the five-year mission and its aftermath, the period between TMP and TWOK, or something set between TFF and TUC. (I guess pre-TOS is technically an unseen time period, but I'm happy to let SNW occupy that spot on its own.)

The one thing I do NOT want to see is any attempt to remake any of the TOS episodes. Let them stand as they are, warts, sexism, and all!

It definitely has shades of that, yeah.

I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that one (or even both) projects do get made, but whether they’re quite like what Matalas had in mind, or what Goldsman and Myers have in mind now, is anybody’s guess.

Heck, at this point, “Legacy” might well not even include Matalas, but yeah.

Year One is what they seem to want [even though I'm not going to pretend to be surprised by this!], even though it would be better if they did Year 4/.5/TMP era (going beyond that may be a stretch?)

In the first show, an elderly William Shatner is given a tour by the ship's therapist...😆
I don't think there's a chance that Myers and Goldsman are talking this loudly in public venues about the "dream" of doing Year One without at least a tacit go-ahead from Kurtzman and probably other executive types at Paramount. They have to be testing the wind...

Besides the Enterprise-D bridge, there are no sets from Picard. Everything was struck after season 3 ended. Everything would need to be rebuilt from scratch.

The current executives don't matter, unless they stay in place post merger. But this decision is going to come from the top, given Ellisons history. The question is have there been any unofficial communications on the subject. If I had to guess. I'd say no, the merger was fraught enough already. But public appeals are also a way to get Skydance appraised of their desires without direct communication.

If the new heads of the studio want to get involved in managing TV shows they're going to be awfully busy. That's hardly strategic.
