So... Trelane without being named. (Nice touch having de Lancie voice his dad, tying into a novel where Q and Trelane are related... no surprise, as Kirsten Beyer IS a ST novelist.) I didn't like that... was too much like ENT with the Ferengi. It was ludicrous, Trelane here. Trelane or his never showed they had the ability to move through time. Also, Scotty saw him briefly on the sensors... Q aren't detectable unless they WANT to be. So I don't think Trelane is a Q, despite the de Lancie easter egg.
If this was a longer season, the silliness would feel earned... DS9, for instance, would have 6 episodes of the Dominion War then have a levity episode with Worf and Dax's wedding. But because the seasons were longer, those episodes felt EARNED. Here, with such short seasons, it's taking away a big slot for deeper material. Comedy is great to have... it's needed to help balance drama and darkness. But it works in drips WITHIN the episode, not BE the entire episode. Plus... the comedy wasn't that good here.
Using Wham!... love the song, but it just doesn't feel right using it here. (Same problem I had with Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in BEYOND.)
I did love THE TWILIGHT ZONE reference with the cornfield. And Pike's wraparound uniform!
Glad to see we will be getting some meaty story for Ortegas... her trauma. That last scene was good.
Overall, I gave this a 3.

This reminds me of fan fics I wrote when I was a child, though they technically took place in an "original" world they were in fact rather obviously plagiarized Star Trek. Anyway, the antagonists of my faux Starfleet were a race of four armed aliens rather originally named the Four Arms. I even had a Four Arm rebel against his people and join the faux Starfleet and was the tactical officer on the central starship the stories took place on. Yes, he was basically Worf Lite.
It looked good enough to do what it needed to do. The fact is it they honored the original look.
So the 60s looked like TOS? I disagree.

That suitable Original Series footage was the footage of the empty bridge seen in the background, when Scotty entered the holodeck. It was Visual Effects Producer Dan Curry, like Moore a closet Original Series fan, who remembered the empty bridge scene of the original Enterprise from The Original Series episode "This Side of Paradise". (Star Trek: The Next Generation 365, p. 274) The scene, color corrected and enhanced, was looped into the longer footage as eventually featured in the episode. Due to the "looping" of the scene, and blue screening it behind Scotty performer James Doohan, the small, wedge-shaped part of the set, though somewhat cramped, served exceptionally well, as it could be used to represent different parts of the bridge by slightly redressing it and using different camera angles. Ironically, Doohan did not appear in the episode from which the footage was taken. The shot of the original viewscreen (with no one sitting at the helm/navigation console) was recycled from "The Mark of Gideon". (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, 3rd ed., p. 219)
I also gave it a 3 and we concur on most of your points. The only difference is I did like Sabotage in Beyond only bc of the call back to the 2009 scene with young Kirk in his dad's car. And Pine's face in Beyond when he heard the song made it a satisfactory call back as well. I don't mind those kinds of easter eggs.
Scotty is going to age a heck of a lot in 5 years. Lol

I always get a kick out of these Spock episodes. I find them amusing. I pretty much figured this was Tremaine from the get go. He just had that vibe.
