The two words mean extremely bad.

Normally, I'd agree with you on this.

However, there have been a number of episodes that are abysmal but are not quite terrible, or vice versa if you wish, due to a few things.

"LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN..." immediately springs to mind. The episode is abysmal (and indeed ranks as the 5th worst of DS9 for me), and Worf was terrible here... but his scene with Dax toward the end explaining the 'why' of who he is was really, really good.

Or "Code of Honor"... a terrible episode but with an outstanding performance by Jessie Lawrence Ferguson and a great Data/Geordi friendship scene.

I guess it all comes down to 'can I defend this episode' using scenes or dialogue or ships or whatever you like about the episode.

It’s canon, unfortunately: terrans have a low tolerance for light. This only came up once and was quickly forgotten, but that’s it.

The thing about prequels is that this, like Spock's Vulcan dyslexia, have a built-in explanation for why they were never mentioned again. They were cured offscreen (or in the case of Terran eyes, they all got an "upgrade" to match those of their prime counterparts after becoming envious about reading about their greater light tolerance on the Defiant's computer) and that was that

I never found terrible to be worse than abysmal. So qualifiers are very helpful.

FWIW, I think it is opposite.

Saying something is terrible means it is bad.

Saying something is abyssmal is saying it is as bad as it can get. Abyssmal is bottomless. By definition, it cannot get worse than that. There is no bottom. There is nothing below it.
