Why is Michael going on all these away missions? She’s the captain. She should be on the bridge.
I also laughed when Michael introduced the bridge crew to him. Like they will be important. They haven’t been before. :)
Come on. I know you've watched Star Trek more than once.
Not really the reason for the intros, but thanks for playing.

I have disliked every single Trill episode on Star Trek so far. Including all of them on DS9. Hell, even the first one on TNG.

The concept itself is great - Stargate basically just took it, combined with the conspiracy bugs, and created one of the best alien races in fiction, period! They did so many interesting, creative things with the concept and had so many interesting, unique characters.

But on Star Trek... everything Trill has been just grating to watch. Yes, even (especially) Jadzia everytime she goes into her background. So yeah. If I don't hate this episode, I will count that as a win...
Soooo.... I found this episode... tolerable.

Star Trek is really not good at mysticism. I guess they're afraid of Star Wars or copying Dune. But those candles look cheap as fuck.
Also not great at "epic or monumental scale" (mainly due to being a television show and not having the budget of Ahsoka. "Prometheus" this is not).

Rarely did a modern Trek episode feel as much as a 90s planet-of-the-hats filler episode like this one.

However the monsters really looked nice, and I find Saru & the Vulcan lady absolutely adorable.

Nitpick: I find Rayner's (& Cruz's) veneers really distracting.

6. This one was fairly dull. The Akira and Gray stuff was dull. The Saru and the Vulcan lady was boring. The stuff with Michael, Book, and the Symbiote was ok--not particularly compelling but slightly less dull than the rest. It felt like this episode was just marking time. A bit worrying given that it's only the third episode.

The best part was Tilly putting Raynar in his place.

The books have symbiotes getting too big to be implanted, and then the really big old ones live deep in the caves.

Thank you.

Fatshaming?

Surely the problem is that they don'y make Trills big enough?

Fuckin' replicators.

There are no truly 20th century options left to dial up, that every mother#ucker in the future weighs as much as a super model.

It's a waste land.

After two wild ride type episodes, we come to one that is a breather. It's both a necessity and somewhat of a letdown.

I'll start with Adira and Gray. I have never been bored with a relationship in the franchise as much as this couple. There's just no chemistry there. Each scene with those two really dragged down the episode. (If I'm being honest, this has been the case in every episode they are together.) Given that Gray was doing the voiceover at the end, I hope that means this is the last time we see him.

Rayner... I really love his character. He is a MUCH needed breath of fresh air. I think I have seen him compared to Jellico... I actually think he is more a fusion of Jellico and Picard. Jellico, while very by the book and formal, also made it a point to call everyone by their first name. Picard rarely did that, and Picard was also very private about his feelings and kept a professional distance from his crew most of the time. (In direct opposite of Jellico, Picard rarely referred to his crew by their first name, with the exception of Crusher... but there's obvious reasons there.) Picard was not quite as by the book as Jellico, though. I hope he maintains who he is but relaxes a bit. I definitely don't want him to be turned into another one of the crew who just gets emotional in the middle of a crisis. (But this is DISCO, so the odds are high there, unfortunately.)

Saru and T'Rina... I love these two together. Watching him navigate a relationship AND politics at the same time is very entertaining. It will be very interesting to see how he does in both during the rest of the season.

Speaking of politics... I like that we are getting some scenes on getting the Federation back up. Little moments that illustrate a lot of work is still needed... gives it a sense of realism.

Wilson Cruz... he's another highlight of this show. "He REALLY works out." LMAO! He completely transformed into Jinaal here, and it sure seemed like he was having a blast not being Culber for an episode.

I might be wrong, but based on dialogue here, the symbiotes don't live after 800 years? I get that they probably don't live forever, but it seemed to be implied that it's more a choice rather than dying of old age. I'm curious why this is, if that is the case.

As soon as 'Jinaal' left, I knew this was another test. And I knew that it would be a test exactly like he explained. That predictability here brought down this episode, too.

Moll showing up and putting... something on Adira's shirt. Clearly, she's standing back and letting Discovery do the work for her. Smart.

More DS9 love! The Dominion War is referenced! The Breen are talked about! The Tzenkethi are referenced, and it looks like we are going to their space next! I hope we finally get to see one.

Overall, there was more things to like than dislike... but the dislikes REALLY bogged down the episode. I'll give this a 6.

At the end of Episode 1, it said ‘For JP with love’, he was a camera operator on 40 episodes who passed away according to TrekCulture, the ship the camera flies past. The ship the camera passes by at the start bares his last name

Sean really doesn’t like the flickering holograms

2 out of 10, for some reason just incredibly boring.. some hight lights like Tilly reaming the Cmdr but the Saru T'rina was AGONIZING..
Do you REALLY think that T'Rina hadn't thought of the consequences of marrying Saru? Him halting the wedding was.. such crap writing. Really pissed me off. All he had to do.. is after Assistant 1 talked to him, that he got T'Rina and ask, have you thought of the consequences of our marriage on your political career? She says YES. then Saru says.. Okay, nothing more to say, send out the invitation. As She Said.. She's in no need of a freaking saviour.. UGH.. Such Crap Writing....

I'll be happier once they stop collecting the pieces one by one next to dangerous encounters. It's old already.
That's not to say I didn't like other things about the episode. Just tired of the fetch quest.

Feel exactly the same way. Upon hearing the first distant bellow from that creature, I knew we were going to be in store for an overly-long and uninteresting action sequence.

I rewatched it again which is fast for me.

I did like it better the second time. The character beats worked better for me, the pacing, and so did the "test" of Book and Burnham.

Grade is unchanged right now.
