My prediction is Saru will die but Jones will stay on the show as one of the Preserver aliens in new makeup. Burnham steps down as Captain to become the Ambassador and Raynar becomes the new Captain of Discovery.

I'm about 20 minutes into this one, and so far the audio mix is driving me crazy. There's a lot of raw audio that should've been ADR'd. The first science lab scene with Michael, Saru, Tilly, and Adira was all over the place.

I'll elaborate on why I don't think Saru will be killed off.

1. They didn't know this would be the last season when it was being filmed. If they thought there might've been a Season 6, they would've wanted Doug Jones back. I don't think he would've wanted to leave the show prematurely.

2. Let's go with the idea of "Marriage & Happiness = Death". Okay. Fine. If they're going to choose who they're going to kill off, it's going to be the character who's not in the opening credits. Saru's actor is in the opening credits. T'Rina's isn't. If anyone's going to die in this couple, it'll be T'Rina.

3. If T'Rina had been killed off, and there was a Season 6, the writers could've thought, "Okay. Now we can see how Saru deals with this." They can even do that at the end of Season 5 if, in fact, T'Rina is killed off.

4. I think the fact that some people expect it means it's not going to happen.

5. Rayner won't last as First Officer. Something is up with him. Which will leave the First Officer spot open once again. At the end of the day, this is a TV series. TV series like the Status Quo, which means Saru would be back to his old position by the end. Ergo, he can't be killed off.

6. Finally, Riker and Troi were married in Nemesis. Neither one was killed off, and TPTB still try to have them in as many Star Trek series as possible to this day. Proof right there that marriage doesn't automatically mean death.

9/10. I thought this was a little better than the premiere. I liked the focus on Michael and Saru. They've come a long way. I liked Rayner more this episode and am looking forward to seeing his dynamic with Burnham in the future.

This was a better episode than the premiere.

Tilly and Rayner have an inverse theme going on... Tilly wanting to show her cadets how to understand the mission but they are good at tasks, while Rayner fully understands the mission but missing the mark on tasks.

I have always enjoyed Callum Keith Rennie in his various roles, and he does not disappoint here. His scene at the hearing... love it, and everything he said. (I've actually had very similar conversations with store leadership at my previous jobs. You can guess who I sounded like...) He's going to be a great XO.

Again, Doug Jones just knocking it out of the park. Him and Sonequa were fantastic in this episode. Every scene with those two was just gold.

I love the callback to TNG's "Booby Trap"... another favorite of mine.

Vance again showing his awesomeness.

While this did create a bit of 'small universe syndrome', the fact Book knows who Moll is adds an interesting wrinkle.

The character beats were even better here than in the premiere, and felt a bit more natural. I give this episode a 9.

The thing with killing Saru is you know you can still keep Doug Jones and have him play another alien character. Or even a human. I think he would love the chance to be able to play a human.

Quick question....
Dutch Skyshowtime dropped the first episode this morning, but no second episode (yet). Did you guys have to wait a few hours in between both episodes?

No. They both dropped on Paramount Plus at the same time
