Spoilers Season 5 to premiere April 4th

We've only seen Iconian portals, and that showed up in DS9 as well, and they wouldn't destroy or save the galaxy directly. Dyson sphere would be cool, but that also has no clear connection to such power. The Chase revealed that many aliens are related, but there was no big tech artefact IIRC.
Which powerful ancient artefact tech would be kept on a Romulan science (not scout) ship? We only saw one in Next Phase
Iconian gateway: something that can manufacture, control, or weaponize it.

The Chase had a Computer program written into DNA. There could be a more expansive primer out there for more species, which could be used for good or ill.

Dyson builders or their tech could make a really big splash. They would have been able to move a star, replicate robots, and deconstruct a solar system to make it work.

I don't think the artifact is on the science ship.
"After an eight-hundred-year-old Romulan vessel is found, Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery are sent to retrieve it. But the artifact inside is stolen, starting an epic chase."

The T'Kon moved stars around, but were revisited in Resurgence, which however is not canon of course. But are their portals artefacts that can be put on ships? The box we saw also didn't have T'Kon writings on it, I think. The box might be from a new culture and only contain the old thing.

What would Romulans be within reach of? Gomtu weapons?

Something from the Kelvin side? Narada? Red Matter?

There may be a connection to the 09 supernova, but that's not 90s TNG... unless another Tox Uthat was used for that. Would love to see the Vorgons return!

Cool poster!

I’m wondering about those symbols or letters and if they could mean anything. I gather this season will be a bit of an Indian Jones-esque treasure hunt, so an alien riddle that needs to be solved would certainly fit that. And who knows, maybe they put that on the poster not merely as a graphical element, but because they want people to figure out the meaning behind it?

Here’s what I’m seeing: Apparently it’s 15 repetitions of the same sequence of symbols. The sequence seems to consist of four symbols, with one symbol repeating. Kinda looks like Z A A W (or, if you turn it upside down, M N N S?) to me.

Any cryptologist among us?

2 are right next to each other, they may be at the beginning and the end, and they look vaguely like a K, while those in between could be an I and a R ... :D

I found a review with big spoilers, including the answer.

https://cinapse.co/2024/03/sxsw-2024-star-trek-discovery-season-5-finds-a-new-sense-of-adventure/

On the old science ship is an ancient Romulan puzzle box (apparently the one in the trailers), they meet a relic trader who is an Altan Soong type synth, and Tilly finds out what is in the box: A Romulan scientists' notes concerning
“the Progenitors”
from the TNG episode
The Chase!
They find their planet and the tech they left there...

Now I'm excited! :D

Resisting the urge to click your spoiler so bad. Will try to go into this unspoiled. It’s promising that you’re excited by it. :)

(Pretty uncool that the board software just shows the content of your spoiler to me the moment I quote it.)

This early Trekcore review makes the season sound promising as well. I’m especially excited for the secondary characters getting more substantial parts. And the way they’re going to handle the mystery this season sounds good as well.

I really hope it turns out to be a great season. I'll reserve judgment 'til it's done though*, the early episodes almost always seem more promising than the resolution. Not trying to be a grump, I just don't trust Lucy with that football. ;)

*Judgement of the whole season, that is. Naturally, I'll judge each ep as they come out.

Yup, I’m the same. I think I’ve been hopeful about each of the seasons so far (save for maybe the last one, where I had basically given up on the show) and went in hoping for the best. I don’t doubt I will find things worthy of critique, but I would love to be pleasantly surprised by them managing to put out one season that works as a whole for me.

I have to admit, it was kinda funny when I read that Trekcore review and they said the producers had been retooling, tweaking and course-correcting the show yet again. I mean, we’re in season five of this show, its final season. And they still change things. I know, realistically you probably do a little bit of that for each season of your show. But I still thought it was kind of funny.

It's been great, the show has felt fresh every season.

Yeah, it has that effect. I just watched the season two premiere and was struck by how much it almost feels like another pilot/first episode. They kinda did that for the first three seasons and it always made it feel like a fresh start. I suppose that’s not the worst thing to do when you always have to be mindful that this season might be some viewers’ first ever.

However, I do think there’s also a danger inherent in this constant course-correcting, in that it might telegraph the writers’ insecurities about the show’s premise and can work against the show establishing what it wants to do.

And before you say anything, I realize that that’s not what it feels like for you. Saying something potentially critical of the show is not attacking it and you don’t need to feel like you have to defend it every chance you get. I recognize that you and many others are more than perfectly fine with the show. And that’s awesome, genuinely. I’m just conveying my perspective, is all. :)
