First thing, the stakes are not universe ending.
The 'haze' used in the first 4 seasons is dialed down
lots of nice shots of the Discovery, well lit
The mcguffin isn't a secret, there's no "What is this thing?" we know exactly what they're hunting for the very start

Though the TrekCore writer thinks the stakes were high. Guess personal interpretation
sounds like the treasure is connected to existing Trek lore

Highlights from the reviews:

Moll and L’ak are looking for an ancient piece of technology which, no joke, can be connected to an episode of 1990s Trek in the most tenuous of ways
Hey, the Saurian Linus is very present on the bridge this season – with dialogue and everything! Get ready to hear about his people’s mating habits.

The season’s driving story is also very cool, and longtime Star Trek fans are going to a get a kick out of it.
Discovery is using Star Trek’s existing canon to expand the world in a really cool way this season, and I think a lot of other fans will be as pleased with that connection as I am.
Season 5 feels much more confident in pulling things out of the Star Trek toybox and actually playing with them — making an important difference to ensure that the show isn’t just called Star Trek, but actually feels like a part of the Trek universe, too.

Disco fans can prepare to be delighted by this final season, which confidently and unapologetically doubles down on the show’s distinct features while continuing to weave in more Star Trek lore than you can shake a lirpa at.

There’s something out there. A technology. An artifact. Something that can help the galaxy or destroy it. Discovery has to find it before someone else does. It’s a little bit Indiana Jones, a little bit The Fifth Element, and a whole lot of a third thing we won’t mention here.

An episode of "The Next Generation" provides the lore at the center of "Discovery" Season 5.
We won’t say which one, but it’s a plot point that’ll inspire a good number of nods from the audience: “Yeah, why didn’t they ever follow up on that before now?” It’s a good example of internal continuity for the franchise organically inspiring a cool plotline, not just a callback for the sake of nostalgia.

And while previous seasons seem to relish in drawing out some of the plot mysteries, season 5 doesn’t waste time and starts opening up its presents right away.
And as noted before, if you aren’t a fan of those scenes when they stop the action to have a sidebar about their feelings, this show is just never going to let those go.
There are more ties into Trek Lore, ala Picard, a lighter tone with more episodic elements like Strange New Worlds, and even some of the optimistic enthusiasm of Prodigy.

Intriguing, right? Now... which TNG element could it be? The Tox Uthat? Did that cause the supernova in 09? :D

That was from the 27th Century, one of the clues they find (based on the preview clips) is from a 24th Century Romulan Scout ship

My first thought was that maybe the Stone of Gol from Gambit was not destroyed after all, as an artifact in multiple pieces seems like exactly the sort of thing Disco would go for. But on the other hand, Gambit was already a story about having to find all the pieces so it's hard to imagine they'd do it all over again.

What tech item from the 24th century can help or destroy the galaxy? They do say though that it's from a TNG episode, not that the thing itself is from the 24th.
Stone of Gol can kill people, how can it help or destroy galaxies?
If they hadn't said tech artefact, I'd have thought maybe they find a Douwd or something like that :D

Iconian? Dyson Sphere tech? The Chase?

Iconian? Dyson Sphere tech? The Chase?
We've only seen Iconian portals, and that showed up in DS9 as well, and they wouldn't destroy or save the galaxy directly. Dyson sphere would be cool, but that also has no clear connection to such power. The Chase revealed that many aliens are related, but there was no big tech artefact IIRC.
Which powerful ancient artefact tech would be kept on a Romulan science (not scout) ship? We only saw one in Next Phase
