Fargo, Season 5. Bout darn time

There was absolutely nothing about any of them being on the ballot and, in fact, given the episode took place in early November, it would have been too late for any of them to be on the ballot.

Again, I know it's "Fargo," but for some reason it just struck me as the writers trying too hard to be quirky for quirky's sake and it took me out of the series for a moment.
It was about humiliating Roy and egging him on.

It was about humiliating Roy and egging him on.

I do think the media would be interested in that aspect of the event. Roy punching the interview host would be something but the whole thing would explode and go trending all over social media and you know it wouldn't take much effort to find the connection to Danish Graves which would then lead them to Lorraine. In reality it is something that would bring down Roy but it would also come back and bite Lorraine in the ass as well unless should could somehow pin all the blame on Graves. But if you combine that with what is likely to happen in the season final I think she would naturally be ruined as well.

Maybe even jail because even though it seems like she has a connection to Trump which in itself would bring media attention ,I am sure Trump would be more than willing to throw her under the buss and then you also get those banker type of guys she was forcing to sell to her then I don't see how she wouldn't get into trouble. Granted she is rich enough that it is that kind of trouble that wouldn't sent her to the poor house but I think she would loose control over her business. It's one of the reasons I also expect Wayne to sort of takeover when it's all said and done.

Well. That's not at all how I expected it to end.

And yet. It's terribly fitting.

Who knew all a sin-eater needed in life was Bisquick?

I love Roy's ultimate fate, doled out perfectly by Lorraine (but not without a Dot-shot wound to the abdomen). Doesn't make up for the tragic murder of Witt (one I saw coming a mile away, if only he had, too), but I did love how Gator gave up Roy's getaway tunnel (which I also saw coming a mile away, so I guess everything is in balance). Perhaps it would've been too-on-the-nose, but I kind of wish the cigarettes were Lucky Strike.

Turns out Gator did get a Steve-esque redemption after all...it only cost him eyes. I'm not at all surprised Dot forgave him and promised to visit him with oatmeal raisin cookies in tow.

Love and forgiveness over violence and ignorant hate. That's the message this country needs the most right now.

I liked the idea of him going to prison. I even predicted that a few weeks ago. Using prison rape as a hero moment though was I am not exactly sure something that should have been done. I mostly liked everything except one thing and that IMO is Lorranie should have had some kind of punishment for her sins of being someone who exploits people through debt.

IMO one of the worst things happening in this country is how debt has become one of the driving forces for exploiting the poor in this country. The irony is the shit Lorraine does is one of things that fuels the type of people who follow Trump or in this case Roy but not Roy. Roy is a kind of monster that exists in all environments. The irony is Roy kind of admires Trump as man's man but Lorraine also helps prop up Trump not only from her exploitation of debt but literally giving him campaign money. I feel like the show missed out at seeing that connection.

I was really thinking Lorraine would be removed, either through death or some other way and we would see Wayne take over and have his kindness change everything in how the family business was ran. Which I thought they were setting up in the rental car scene when he didn't want to cheat that family even though it was the smart business thing to do.

Loved the final end scenes with Ole. Some of the most pure Fargo you can get. It was both really funny and scary and in the end very moving.

Excellent points about Lorraine and debt. I agree that she should've gotten some kind of comeuppance, but at least she finally saw the light regarding Dot. That shouldn't be enough to forgive her sins, nor should we choose between her or Roy receiving punishment.

I'm kinda with @Jayson1 here on some points. I am glad Roy didn't die, and I do think that would have let him off too easily, but yeah prison rape as punishment is not a nice thing, especially when the overriding message of the show was love triumphing over hate, and while if I'd watched this five years ago I might have seen this differently, now it feels lazy to get away with intimating something horrible but it's ok because its happening to a bad man, it's a cheap trick that I hate when Tarantino does it (look it's ok for our heroes to use extreme violence because they're using it on Nazis/rapists/Manson family etc). On the other side it is in character for Lorraine I suppose. I just wish there'd been a slightly cleaner way to make Roy feel like his wives felt without resorting to what is a cruel and unusual punishment.

I too had expected some kind of comeuppance for Lorraine. I suppose if nothing else she will now have Dot and Olmstead as good angels on her shoulders so that's something, but again there's the fact that Lorraine is using the fact that many men in prison are debtors to bribe them into raping Roy again doesn't sit well. Given the overarching themes of debt, having Wayne give away a car and Munch learn to forgot the debt he believes he's owed seems poor compensation for Lorraine continuing to make millions loaning people, who can't afford to pa it back, money.

I liked that in the end Gator become the frightened little boy he'd been when Nadine was first on the farm, and if anything I got more satisfaction from "Your son ratted you out" than I did from Lorraine's punishment. That Dot agreed to visit him in prison was of course spot on for her character.

I would agree that the final scene with Munch was pure Fargo and I was on the edge of my seat. It did indeed manage to be hilarious and terrifying at the same time! So either Munch really is a 500+ year old sin eater, or a very ill person with a very vivid imagination!

I was shouting at the TV when Witt went into the tunnel, knew how that was going to pan out :(

I wished Olmstead had more to do in the finale, and also I really thought Covid was going to play some kind of part, especially given the show was set just before the pandemic and the one year later puts you smack bang in it, yet nothing. But Hawley is a writer very good at not giving you what you expect, which is so much of what makes Fargo great.

Anyway, I enjoyed this season greatly, not sure quite where I rank it but definitely better then 3 or 4.

I rank the show at 4. Better than 5 easily but maybe one notch bellow season 3. As for Roy in prison I think maybe they should have flashed forward to 2024. He has now been in prison for 6 years. Maybe he has been raped or abused but not because it was set up by one of our characters and certainly not something we are suppose to cheer at. More along the lines of that is what happens in prison sometimes and Roy has been having hard time. He has lost all of his control over his life and doesn't even have anyone left to care for him now that he himself has been abused in ways in which even he shouldn't be like with rape. The lack of empathy for his rape should mirror the lack of empathy he had for Dot and others when he raped them.

I guess it would depend on how it all was filmed though and I am not sure if you have enough time in a single scene to really make that message work. It also sort of reminds me of how much better Better Cal Saul did in it's series final with JImmy going to prison though granted that was also very different situation. Jimmy wasn't really evil like Roy and to boot he was also the shows main character and protagonist. At least they avoided the gimmick of seeing Roy in prison with his son. I mean I assume Gator is going to go to jail but I am curious as to what amount prison time he would receive. Roy I got imagine would have a life sentence but not sure if Gator would get that. Curious about the wife as well who we saw being put in handcuffs. Which reminds. me. I feel bad for her kids. Both mom and dad are going to jail. I guess that means they will be put in the foster system.

Would that still mean jail time or something like probation for a certain amount of years?
Depends on the circumstances, the charge and the deal. If the Feds considered him a valuable enough witness—and/or wanted to take his physical condition into account-they could bring, and let him plead to, a very reduced charge that results in only a minimal sentence under the federal guidelines.

I'd be worried about anyone who was happy with Witt dying :(

Witt basically had to die in order to make the final stuff with Ole work. Not every story can end on a happy ending on a show like Fargo.

I was actually almost angry at Witt for dying like that. He had every damn reason on earth to shoot Roy on sight, he knew exactly how dangerous Roy was, and he still all but let Roy kill him.

As my wife observed, Witt brought a gun to a knife fight and still lost.
