Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

IIRC, Rand was supposed to be a regular on the same level as McCoy. So a step above characters like Sulu and Uhura. They soon figured out the yeoman character was pretty limited.
The character was conceived to be in a similar vein to the 'Miss Kitty'/'Marshall Dillon' character dynamic from the TV series Gunsmoke.

She was going to be the sexual tension/semi love interest for the Captain Kirk character. The TOS S1 episode Dagger of the Mind was originally written with the 'Janice Rand' character specifically in mind.

For whatever reason the producers and writers decided that this setup was not a character dynamic they wanted for the show or the character of Captain Kirk.

I know the names of, like, three of those people.

This is good. Ortegas is far from my favorite character in the show, but that could yet change... so long as she's given more material. I know her actress was excited about a particular episode last season, and I can see why, but... erm, it didn't give her nearly as much to work with as I'd hoped.

All the characters have been so well written and developed it’s really hard for me to zero in on any one thing that puts one over the top compared to the others. I’m still super bummed that they clipped Hemmer, but I get the rationale. I do really like Ortegas, but if I were to forced to pick one, I’d call it for Chapel. I fully credit Jess Bush’s fantastic performance to bring the character into the forefront. I also surprisingly enjoy La’an, whose ancestry I initially found to be quite dubious but they’ve done an amazingly good job fitting it into the greater Trek mythos without being horribly contrived and unbelievable. All IMO, of course. :)

Ortegas may be the character who has had the least attention so far on the show, but she still has far more presence and personality in two seasons of ten episodes than certain characters on Berman era shows had after a full run of four to seven seasons of twenty plus episodes.

There is some humor in Ortegas fangirling over the career of Travis Mayweather on the NX-01 when she's had far more to do on-screen in just twenty episodes than he did in 98.
Actually I don't think she has. She's just more interesting with better dialog and a more engaging actor.

Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global in early merger talks

Warner Bros. Discovery and rival Paramount Global are in early merger talks, a source familiar with the matter told CNBC.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and Paramount CEO Bob Bakish met Tuesday to discuss the contours of a possible deal, said the source, who declined to be named since the talks are private.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s stock fell more than 5% Wednesday, while Paramount shares bounced a little off their lows.

We'll just get less Trek.

I think it's more likely we get less of everything other than Trek from Paramount.

Whatever else you feel about WarnerDiscovery, they've remained committed to "fixing" DC, and didn't abandon the world of Game of Thrones despite the disastrous finale.

Meh…. Could have been worse. Could have been a Sopranos-bad ending. In the history of finales, it was serviceable. Not every series can end lik M*A*S*H did.

I have mixed feelings about this.
