Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

There is some humor in Ortegas fangirling over the career of Travis Mayweather on the NX-01 when she's had far more to do on-screen in just twenty episodes than he did in 98.

Depends on the timeline.

Mayweather

Prime timeline

Became a great pilot without Starfleet Academy in existence by flying freighters; took the NX-01 out on maiden voyage and played a part in a number of first contacts; practical joker offscreen; negotiated with disgruntled freighters that held a Nausicaan pirate hostage: helped liberate Suliban from a Tandaran detention facility; was the first to ever apologize to the Krestassans (and did not need to go through an apology ceremony like Archer did); ended up in a medical emergency while rock climbing twice; navigated a Romulan minefield; visits the Horizon and helps fends off pirates,;performs an L4 while pursued by Klingons in thermobaric clouds while entering the Delphic Expanse; participated in the final battle of the Temporal Wars; returns home a hero of the Xindi conflict; gets taken over by an Organian; helped to find a loophole for Archer in his Ushaan battle with Shran so that Archer wouldn’t kill him and to save the Coalition; resumes romance with Starfleet Intelligence agent Gannet Brooks; safely navigated a comet en route to Mars to rescue Trip, T’Pol and their child as well as to stop Terra Prime, and in turn helped to get the Coalition of Planets back on track.

"Twilight" timeline

Dies offscreen, months before Earth is destroyed, while serving under T'Pol; switched from command division to security/ops and was a redshirt when he died.

Mirror universe

Serves under Reed in the MACOs, boards the USS Defiant, assists Archer in taking the Defiant from Admiral Black, hooks up with Sato and helps her depose Archer and overthrow the Terran Emperor.

Ortegas

Prime timeline

Served in the Klingon war and is remembered as a war hero while holding strong anti-Klingon sentiments, safely navigated a comet which dealing with fire from the Shepards, safety navigated the atmosphere of a brown dwarf orbiting a black hole while evading the Gorn,
helped Spock steal the Enterprise to stop a plot to restart the Klingon war, navigated an asteroid belt after losing her memory, met individuals from the late 24th century, encountered a musical reality, was part of the landing party on Parnassus Beta and met Scotty,
apparently once fought Vulcans with a lirpa and received scars from it.

"A Quality of Mercy" timeline

Remains at the helm for seven more years with no change in rank under Pike, holds anti-Romulan sentiments.

"Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" timeline

At the helm of the UEF Enterprise under Kirk, where they don’t help Spock and his damaged Vulcan ship.

The stuff Mayweather has done holds more weight that what Ortegas has done, and definitely is worth having buildings named after him. But man, his role in the development of the Federation is understated.

Anthony Montgomery should have had you as his agent between 2001 and 2005. Maybe a few things might have turned out differently with the writing for him.

Oh, it's not even probably. General Hospital and a regular role in the cast. Numerous TV-movies. The Miles Away graphic novel that's gotten interest from animators for an adaptation. Montgomery is just always busy and proof that good things do sometimes come to the ones who got ignored at first.

I always felt bad for Mr. Montgomery. He got the short end of the stick. (Mayweather, Sato, Reed and Phlox always got shafted sometimes. I mean It basically was the Archer/T'Pol/Tucker show.)

I was rewatching "Demons" and he tells his former paramour/reporter that he had thoughts about leaving Enterprise and I was wondering if that was Anthony projecting his own feelings about being on the show (granted at the time Enterprise was already cancelled but had it gone on for a fifth season, I wonder if he would've really left.).

Methinks the only reason Rand was featured in promo shots back then was that she was nothing more than ornamental eye candy. No development required. Just silently stand there on the bridge in a nightgown and look vulnerable and pretty for the camera. A shame, as she could have been a really interesting character to watch, being the Captain's shadow as a Yeoman. Telling a few "lower decks"-style stories from her POV would have made for some interesting episodes.

Instead, what we got 30-some years later was a very bitter Commander Rand on Voyager that was tantamount to character assassination. At least it felt like it to me, taking her delivery of the lines into account:

The first thing Yeomen need to do is keep their mouth shut about anything they overhear or see on the Captain's desk. They were not a good source of gossip in the Navy. Radio room, maybe.

I know I've heard it somewhere that Rand was the Excelsior's XO, though I'm not sure if that's official or fanon. At the very least, Flashback seems to imply she is XO, as she's the one who is issuing orders to Tuvok and the other officers in his cabin. Later, when Tuvok voices his objections to Sulu's plan to enter Klingon space, it's Rand who chews Tuvok out and relieves him of duty.

Of course, it can be debated how reliable a source Flashback can be considered.

Flashback’s flashback? Lol

It's true, and I'm loving every minute of it.

I have to say I liked season 1 a lot more than season 2. The only episodes I had fun with were the Lower Decks crossover event and the musical episode which at first I thought "fuck this is stupid" and then got into it.. By the end of that one I loved it.

Oh time travel again.... Must every trekkiverse show do this?

Why the hell not? It's part of Trek's DNA. Might as well complain about aliens being in the show.
