Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I like to think of that as due to the influence of the time period it was written and filmed in. SNW is in that period yet far mor enlightened.

but yeah, the fashion industry (and beauty industry) is toxic and outdated and hopefully is gone by the 23rd century.
You do realize that it was actually Nichelle Nichols and Grace Lee Whitney who pushed for the Starfleet mini skirt uniforms, right?

Originally they were all going to be wearing pants like they did in the original pilot episode of The Cage.

So apparently Carol Kane's claiming that Pelia is thousands of years old: https://trekmovie.com/2023/06/21/ca...ner-on-lanthanites-and-just-how-old-pelia-is/

I don't think we've had lifespans this absurd since Bele claimed he chased Lokai for 50,000 Earth years in 'Let that be your last battlefield' (admittedly if we put Pelia at 2,000 it's still better)

Of coure everyone's wondering if there's a Flint connection. Maybe Pelia will claim to be Helen of Troy and Cleopatra

We've saw both men and women wearing the skirt uniform in Season 1. There were episodes where a character wore the skirt, and episodes where they didn't. Seems to be a personal choice what they want to wear that day.

"She's a beauty. With a good crew."

I hope not. The fashion industry sucks but Fashion is expression and if that goes away then...well, I don't wanna live in that world.

Expression of what? Random nonsense? Racism? Telling people they're wrong for liking a certain color? Wasting resources on unnecessary items to keep up appearances? Nothing about that sounds enlightened.

Power and control.

Basically. It's all about projecting a narrow minded body image, not to mention the waste and other problematic social implications.

If fashion on the shows reflects society then SNW is downright conservative in the way the females dress.

Go to any shopping mall…hell…go to a Target on the weekends and you will see women wearing shorts shorter than the mini-dresses from TOS and Yoga Pants or Blue Jeans and tank tops tighter than anything Jeri Ryan wore on Voyager.

I’m not saying SNW or Trek in general needs or should go that direction but it is something to keep in mind. That they COULD go that direction if they chose to in the same way they us 4K screens on the bridge and not old CRT screens.

True but women are choosing to do that now in civilian situations, not being forced to by a space-based military-like force.

I hope they change the costumes for season 3. I don't like this particular unisex costumes - the thick pants and long t shirt on the girls. it looks good on the guys but terrible on the female characters. it makes many of them look very bulky and shapeless.

TNG Jump suit unisex uniform were great on the men and women. Ironic in SNW Chapel is the only one who is wearing a jump suit and she looks good.

I hope in season 3 of SNW, Uhura, Ortega and Laan are given a brand new uniform that is more fitting and more girly-girly.

Yes, I know we are not in the 60s and mini lycra dresses wont work in 2023, however i hope the the female characters can still be styled more differently than the male characters.
Whut???

It's just valden trying to control women's bodies again. No different from when he said Celia Rose Gooding is insufficiently feminine and needed to grow longer hair. Valden wants to enforce his idea of gender roles on women.

The Hell? Femininity is nonsense anyways and the actress looks perfectly fine in the new show. In fact I think it's good she's not wearing Uhura's TOS hairdo

It would make sense, anyways, for younger Uhura fresh out of the Academy to have a different haircut. It shouldn't BE Nichelle Nichols' hairstyle from 1967 or 1968. Uhura is barely twenty and a different person without all the experiences she's going to have with Pike and Kirk. Her appearance should reflect that.

Wow this thread is getting ugly, especially with the accusations flying of -isms or other. And I certainly would not venture to accuse someone of trying to "control women's bodies" unless I had like 300% evidence because if you're wrong that's literally defamation on a public website.

Some people may not find Uhura's hairstyle personally attractive. Tons of women have made it clear in my real life they don't find my wimpy physique attractive, and I accept that and acknowledge I should do better (admittedly various health issues outside of my job don't make it that easy but I acknowledge that people find my looks as a shortcoming). I do not accuse these women of trying to control my body, and would rightfully be called out as being defamatory and out of line if I said such a thing.

Someone complaining about outfits not being 'feminine' enough sounds controlling or perhaps more accurately stereotyping.

also if people are body shaming you that's not ok for them to do either. Doesn't mean these actresses need to be a certain type.

You forget Flint from TOS S3 Requiem For Methuselah

There was also the sentient energy-being psychopath from TOS S2 Wolf In The Fold, that claimed it had existed before the dawn of time, and would exist beyond Time's end. (Who was ultimately killed by Kirk & Co after being dispersed by the Transporter.)

I'm a little skeptical of yet another alien race which looks exactly like a human. Q is a highly advanced entity whose real form is unknowable (IIRC) so that's fine but then we had a few in TOS, the Betazoids, the El-Aurians, and the Illyrians, and now this one. I realize this is probably necessary but still, it's a bit disappointing.

that said, I'm curious to see the lore of Pelia's species.

Oh, I got used to that half-way through the first year of TOS.

I mean, it's not like gluing a few pieces of rubber on someone's face makes them look like they're from another planet.

I'm not big on overusing basic rubber forehead alien designs (despite liking Bajorans and Trills) but at least it's something more than whatever the heck Betazoids are. I need stuff like Cardassians, Jem'hadar, Ferengi, Bolians, etc., actual aliens.

to be fair, Betazoid didn't look exactly like humans, they look like humans with black contact lenses
