Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Is it just me or does that multi-colored opening scene remind anybody else of that old "The More You Know" thing?

At least he takes responsiblity for this, but he shouldn't have used the Gorn for that. Its going to be entertaining, but eventually someone going to have to clean up the mess it'll make of the time line.
No they won't.

Hey, here's a chance to use that digital fakery and AI that people want to use to slap TOS faces on modern actors!

Use it to do something worthwhile instead.

They can fake voices with AI now.

Change one or two lines of dialogue in "Arena" and the Great Gorn Mystery disappears!

Continuity achieved!

A lot cheaper and faster than fake computer faces, too!

No one said no self expression. But the fucking shade thrown by people for choices, and the lack of freedom pushed on people because of social expectations and exclusivity expected that leaves people feeling excluded that is ridiculous.
Fashion starts in the streets.

I guess because I've designed and made clothes (as well as costumes for theater) I'd like to think I'm not evil. Or even a promoter of exclusivity. My intention is to make people feel good in their skins and what they drape over it.

Yes, and I would like to reduce that barrier.

Yes, I take it personally mostly because of the grief my family members have taken and the negativity they internalize for not fitting in.
I hear you. And I DO understand. I have felt this way myself in the past. As a person who grew up on public assistance, with family members on the autism spectrum, family who are trans, non-binary, gay, or just fat and sassy like me, I say let's change the narrative.

I think that fashion is less a narrative and more a barrier. I might be wrong but right now I just am mad.

Anyway, thread derail over. I'll show myself out.

But how's it self expression when it's always imposed by someone else? These industries are predicated on selling fabricated insecurities.
Again, you are talking about an industry which, arguably, makes money off insecurity. It is seen as imposing arbitrary and ever-shifting ideals that few can afford or live up to. The word fashion clearly triggers a lot of people.

I was a poor kid from a big family who couldn't afford the cool clothes so I learned to make them. Because I like fashion.

So. End of dialog I guess. I will never stop talking about the costumes though! There's even a costume thread somewhere...

I was never arguing against make your own. But it is all arbitrary

Anyways, yeah, I like the costumes on the show too, and don't see any issue with SNW's costume

Here you go.

My grand niece just turned 24 and has been a fashion model for about 5 years now.

Being the intelligent (and beautiful) young lady that she is, she is well on her way to making a yearly six figure income (plus), in the fashion industry.
She has established herself with a very reputable agency and according to her father, has already socked away more money than he has made as a top insurance agent in Hawaii over the last four years. (he's actually been with the company for over a decade now)
It is a very tough industry to break into, but she finds it to be a thoroughly enjoyable endeavour and has so far been able to avoid the pitfalls.

(of course, it helps that her father is constantly raggin' her arse to be aware of said pitfalls)

No AI voice needed.

Just cut the lines.

Job done. 5 minutes work.

I'm a little skeptical of yet another alien race which looks exactly like a human. Q is a highly advanced entity whose real form is unknowable (IIRC) so that's fine but then we had a few in TOS, the Betazoids, the El-Aurians, and the Illyrians, and now this one. I realize this is probably necessary but still, it's a bit disappointing.

that said, I'm curious to see the lore of Pelia's species.

This reminds me, I was watching Voyager recently and in that show one of the first new species they meet in the Delta Quadrant (the aliens in "Time and Again") are completely identical to humans. And nobody on Voyager seems to think that to be strange in spite of the distance between Earth and this planet. I guess that "regular human" is basically just the norm in Star Trek. Most aliens add some sort of additional trait (pointy ears, nose ridges, etc) but some keep it classic and just look like homo sapiens.

I mean, Voyager actually met an entire species that evolved on Earth, plus a group of pre-contact humans from Earth, plus the Ferengi guys who fell through a wormhole on TNG, plus a random shipful of Klingons just wandering around the Delta Quadrant, plus multiple Starfleet ships (granted, some were time travelers) and Seven of Nine was originally a Federation citizen.

The Delta Quadrant's not so far away as it ought to be based on Voyager's storytelling choices.
