News Starfleet Academy Coming to P+

Not with the way humans are today...
People say that and I go why not? Trek has humanity go through some terrible times before joining together. I don't for one second believe we are more divided, even if we are still struggling. I do believe we have worl to do but it comes down to our choices.

It will get worse before it gets better? You're probably right. I actually believe that.

An example of my thinking is this: a theoretical. If we do have a true first contact, like Vulcans in FIRST CONTACT, our civilization as a whole will do one of two things.

Either get our collective heads out of our asses and actually fix the problems of the world and achieve what STAR TREK gives us the belief we can achieve... or everyone will end up wiping each other out because one side can't wrap their heads around the idea that there is another intelligent race out there and the other side can never accept that people can disagree with you without actually not being whatever term they want to coin.

There's going to be no in between, unfortunately, because everyone seems to want to deal in absolutes. A vast majority of people don't know how to agree to disagree anymore.

Unfortunately the Star Trek fanbase is heavily divided.
Indeed. While there were initial divisions in the fanbase over TNG and Enterprise, almost six years on since the release of Discovery there remains a firm division between those who accept it and those who consider it along with Strange New Worlds as belonging in a separate universe from the one TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT takes place in and it's hard to see this changing anytime soon.

So there's people who are right, and there's people that are wrong.

I don't see why it needs to change. Why not just enjoy it and celebrate mutual enjoyment?

For example, the Daystrom Reddit outright bans people for suggesting an in-universe explanation for DISCOVERY and SNW being ahem so different to everything else is a multiverse. And r/startrek of course heavily policed comments about the implications of the USS New Jersey.
I don't care, they get to set the rules they want. I honestly don't blame since it derails so many threads here since some people can't handle minor changes to aesthetics.

So you think those divisions disappeared? Folks were complaining about ENT up to beyond the last episode. .

There's definitely different silos. One thing that really surprised me about about returning to this BBS was how many hard core fans were pro-DISCOVERY. I haven't seen that reflected in, say, the YouTube space or some of the dedicated Star Trek lore websites. But general social polarization has been translated into popular culture, so I can see the "why"...

Meanwhile the old Star Trek vs Star Wars has shifted into debating which franchise has been more damaged post-Abrams.

Just speaking for myself, I consider the differences to be far more than just minor changes to aesthetics.

And we have a winner.

Amidst all the silly excuses you people came up with to explain this, this here makes the most sense.

Though, it is questionable to base the whole premise of these series around such a flawed concept.... assuming of course this involves Discovery characters.

It may not, and be a clean break from what has come before.
I’m not sure you’ve entirely grasped my meaning.

YouTube and it's comments sections are a wretched hive of scum and villainy and should not be taken as any kind of barometer of popularity.
The algorithm rewards negative attention, so it's in the best interest to hate anything that's trending since it leads to more comments and reactions. It's why so many channels are just about trashing Marvel movies or Star Wars. They may not actually have an opinion on it, but pretending that you hate it can pay off.

I thought a bit before replying and while I agree that those would be the majority reactions, I don't believe they will be the only reactions. I agree that it has to get worse before it gets better, bu that is the nature of human change. Behaviors don't just change without a substantial reevaluation of how one meets one needs. From a group standpoint there has to be willingness to at least acknowledge the other side as people before we can even start to talking solving the problems.

But, I'm hopelessly optimistic. I've been told the world is ending since I was 9. I've found politics frightening, maddening and eventually just ridiculous because each election cycle is more of the same. Instead, I focus on how can I impact the world around me, and group with people whom I at least share an agreement on what the problem is, even if I don't agree on everything with them. And I think that if many here knew some of my political opinions you would be surprised. That is the nature of the middle ground. That is the nature of compromise. That is why I believe so strongly that humans can change.

Unless we can sue for these damages I'm really convinced that both of these fan bases have a misguided notion of what damaged actually means.

Until I can no longer enjoy the stuff I did, i.e. TOS, the OT (theatrical edition), then there is no damages. It is simply a new interpretation.

Indeed. It's an unearned platform. It as a measuring point for anything is odd, to be fair.

There's of course a school of thought that argues ENT is a product of the change in the timeline caused by the Enterprise E travelling from the 24th century and not a true prequel to TOS.
