Discovery ending with Season 5

Perhaps people would have more sympathy for you if you actually had some thoughtful and legitimate reasons why you feel this way, rather than just the usual nonsensical things you post.

I have already stated my reasons. I love star trek and to see a mediocre product put out with amateur writing damages the brand. I don't want the brand damaged.

Calling Discovery "mediocre" is too generous.

Strange New Worlds is mediocre.

Had it not been for the words "Star Trek" in the title, Discovery would have been cancelled after one season.

Yeah. I surprised it was renewed after that first season. It didn't resemble star trek at all.

Firefly was great. I like Dollhouse even better. If not for Firefly, I wouldn't have ever watched Buffy or Angel. But I'm glad I did.
Dollhouse made me realize what an incredible actor Alan Tudyk is.

So, anyway, for everyone else, let's try to get this somewhat back on track. What was your favorite season of Discovery and what was your least favorite?

The fourth is my favorite. Upon reflection, I think the third is my least favorite. I'm looking forward to the fifth season, but I think the fourth season was more Star Trek than Star Trek, so I actually would've been okay if it stopped right there.

The fifth season, it seems like they're going on a quest, so there will be a discovery. As such, I think it might be the purest season, if we're talking about living up to the name of the series.
First season was so amazing and fresh, so it's mostly my favorite. And I was so happy to see Star Trek again! Second season had Pike and Spock and Una and I loved trying to figure out what was going on. 3rd is probably my least favorite, but I liked it more than it seems most people did. I loved the resolution of season 4.

Then you miss the point.

Star Trek fans are too myopic, to self-focused, and fail to recognize that the studio looks at Trek differently than fans. They look for money produced, and if one part of a brand starts failing it is taken as a reflection of the whole brand.

There's a saying that I would use when I used to coach tennis; "if I win we win; if we win I win."
Star Trek fans would do well to realize this or the bell will toll for the franchise because we're to busy fighting amongst ourselves over petty reasons.
^^^^This!^^^^

Even if they made a Star Trek I absolutely loathed, I would wish it success because *that* is "good for the brand". And it would be *someone's* favorite. I used to be snobby about things I don't like, but age has brought an *itsybitsyteenytiny* bit of maturity and I (try to) no longer piss on other people's parades.

Strictly speaking, it wasn't renewed for a second or third season.

Paramount/CBS and Netflix had a five-season production deal (similar to what Paramount/CBS had with Amazon for the three seasons of Picard).
There was zero chance it would get canceled after one season. Paramount/CBS would have never said "No" to free content for CBSAA/P+. Netflix had to pay no matter how the show performed.

After three seasons Paramount bought out the DIS contract from Netflix and renewed DIS for seasons 4 and 5.
It's very easy to renew an expensive show if someone else has already paid for sets, digital assets, casting, costumes, ETC.

Paramount made Netflix pay for the expansive location shoots in Iceland for season 3.
Guess why there are no expansive location shoots for seasons 4 and 5? It's now all virtual sets (The Volume).

All this gloating from people that because the show was renewed for five seasons is a supposed sign of success is so misguided (same thing for PIC and LD).

I might come off as this hard-nosed headstrong defender of the show, but there are posters like @Dukhat @TimeIsAPredator @Amasov @Rahul and @eschaton where I don't agree with them about DSC but we get along just fine and I respect all of their viewpoints.

But I know it's never happening with Pubert. There are certain things that will happen and certain things that won't. And you have to know when to walk away and stop forcing it.
