"Should have" is a very different thing from "I would have preferred."

I would have preferred if they had kept the TOS exterior, but subjective preferences are not creative obligations. The makers of SNW have no obligation to match the TOS exterior except in broad terms (which it does, in broad terms).

Something I heard (and thought of) many times at 4am when the bars I hung out in were closing.

And they made him fight Picard with that little knife. Guy could have smashed Worf bare handed.

So, in other words, you can’t answer the question. Gotcha.

    Pretty much, yeah.
Doesn't stop me from having a clear favourite in each case (it's usually the original version - except for Hulk).

Funnily enough I had a conversation with a friend - he is NOT a Trekkie, but watched SNW after my recommendation (and likes it).

I don't like the shows Enterprise - it's vastly inferior to so many other canon and fan versions of the same ship. I DO love the shuttle though - it's a fantastic update of the original design.
He does NOT like the shuttle - he's a Star Wars guy, and the shuttle looks too much love a box for him. He DOES like the enterprise though - it looks interesting, and he's not familiar with the different versions, so he has no baseline to compare it to.

    So, yeah.
In my heart the original is the "real" version. But I like the show, so this is just fun nitpicking for me.

When I think "Batmobile" it's the Adam West one. But that doesn't mean the others aren't cool.

And I’m pretty sure the average person on the street thinks TOS Enterprise when they hear ‘Enterprise.’ Maybe the Enterprise-D, but the TOS Enterprise still beats it by a long shot in the public consciousness. They certainly don’t think of the Discoprise.

More like - when you hear "X-Wing":
Do you think about Luke Skywalker's iconic ship? Or about Poe Dameron's sequel variant?

Most people probably don't see a big difference. But for those that do - it's clearly the original.

I doubt the average person on the street is aware there are differences between the TOS Enterprise and the DIS/SNW Enterprise.

I think you over estimate just how much the general public gives a damn about what the Enterprise looks like.

To 99% of the population, this is what the Enterprise looks like:

I once asked my then-not-Trekkie fiance whether she preferred the Enterprise-D or the Excelsior class after we saw a TNG episode where Riker's old ship, the Hood, appeared.

She looked at me and said, "What's the difference?"

Every once and awhile, I'll ask my wife her opinion on one of these petty arguments we Trekkies seem to live on. Her response is almost always the same.

    "Who cares"?

I've even shown her the SNW Enterprise and the Original Series version side by side.

    "It's the same thing".

I ask, "but don't you see the slanted pylons"?

    "Who cares"?

    I love that woman.

    Poe's looks better. I definitely think Poe's. I cannot stand Luke's.

My mom used to think the D was the "old Enterprise", and the type 6 shuttle was the new one :D

And I showed several fans, including people here, a picture of the TOS and the SNW versions next to each other, with differences highlighted, and the reactions were "What are we looking at here?" and "I never saw those differences before". :D

Um, I never said that the general public cares what the ship looks like. I said that if ‘USS Enterprise from Star Trek’ came up in casual conversation, that the TOS version would most likely be the one that would pop into their head, seeing as how it is so ingrained in the public consciousness. It’s not like it’s the Enterprise-E on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. It’s the original.

BTW, I just finished watching the first episode of SNW with my gf, who is a Trek fan but not as hardcore as I am, although she did grow up with TOS like I did. When the episode finished, she asked, “So is this some kind of reboot?” ;)
