It wasn't a fair fight. Clearly the Metrons were on Kirk's side because the "Arena" had a bias toward Earth projectile weapons. And it had an Earth normal gravity pull. The Gorn Captain's muscles weren't adapted to this, judging by his clumsy movements.

No, it simply because Gorn costume was inspired by Ultraman's monster of the week. Gorn is basically a copy of Godzilla from Ultraman.

Godzilla is it's own franchise based on it's own set of Kaiju.

Ultraman is a completely seperate Tokusatsu franchise.

And Godzilla is WAY more detailed then the Gorn Captain that fought Kirk ever was.

Actually Kaiju was pre-date Ultraman franchise. The scene of gigantic monster destroying Tokyo was exist sometime before the first Ultraman ever made. And Ultraman was born following the popularity of Kaiju Franchise. I think that Ultraman was made as the hero who protect Earth from Kaiju Invasion. And look at the first monster that Ultraman fought. The name was Bermular. Just goggle it. And look how similar Bermular to Godzilla.

I can say that Ultraman was inspired by Kaiju Franchise. Or maybe more than that, they were the child project that made based on Kaiju.

I think Gorn costume was inspired by Kaiju / Ultraman. And the slow motion Gorn was so "Kaiju" movement in the classic Ultraman.

I think the new Gorn in SNW should ignore the old Gorn design. Maybe they retain the basic design; the lizard. But should forget about the slow motion that shown by the Gorn Captain in TOS, and make them so dangerous and very effective predator.

If Godzilla can evolve to what it is now, why not Gorn; the one forgotten Alien from Star Trek Franchise that was only appear in an episode of TOS? And one episode of Enterprise?

I was hoping for a little body horror, but still, nice bit of suspense, good character work. Solid 8.

The constant traumatizing life threatening situations every week under Pike's command caused Uhura to hide in the communications division and never come out for the next 30+ years, and I don't really blame her.

Also, the shot of La'an's "Gorn code" paper showed morse code type signals with equivalent alphabet letters. However, without a knowledge of the Gorn language, how is this useful for anything, much less sending a full fledged message to the Gorn? And if there were indications that La'an knew Gorn language, it's never mentioned.

Gets a 7 from me. Good pacing, each character had some moments to shine. I was slightly disappointed the "malevolent force" wasn't some being like Nagilum. Then again, I went into the episode cold, so could only guess. This series is getting better with each episode.

Star Trek: Gorn Contact

Guinan: You bitch.

La'an: This really isn't the time.

Guinan: Okay. I don't know jack about the Federation but everybody out there thinks that staying here and fighting the Gorn is suicide. They're just afraid to come in here and say it.

La'an: The crew is accustomed to following my orders.

Guinan: They're probably accustomed to your orders making sense.

La'an: None of them understand the Gorn as I do. ...No one does. No one can.

Guinan: What is that supposed to mean?

La'an: Years ago, they forced me into their nursery. I had their Gorn eggs implanted throughout my body. I was slaved to their lizard hive, every trace of individuality erased. I was a breeding sack. So you can imagine, my dear, I have a somewhat unique perspective on the Gorn and I know how to fight them. Now if you will excuse me I have work to do.

Guinan: I am such an idiot. ...It's so simple. The Gorn hurt you, and now you're going to hurt them.

La'an: In the Federation we don't succumb to revenge. We have a more evolved sensibility.

Guinan: Bullshit! I saw the look on your face when you shot those Gorn on the rec room. You were almost enjoying it!

La'an: How dare you!

Guinan: Oh, come on, La'an. You're not the first to get a thrill from murdering someone. I see it all the time.

La'an: Get out!

Guinan: Or what? You'll kill me, like you killed your own brother?!

La'an: There was no way to save him.

Guinan: How do you know? You didn't even try. Where was your evolved sensibility then?

La'an: I don't have time for this.

Guinan: Oh! Hey! I'm sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt your little quest. Captain Ahab has to go hunt the whale.

La'an: What?

Guinan: You still have Earth books in the Federation?

La'an: This is not about revenge.

Guinan: Liar!

La'an: This is about saving the future of humanity.

Guinan: La'an, blow up the damn ship!

La'an: No! ...NOOOOOOO!!!!!!

(La'an breaks the starship display cabinet with her phaser rifle)

La'an: No! ...I will not sacrifice this ship. We've made too many compromises already. Too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They turn entire worlds into breeding grounds, and we fall back. Not again! The line must be drawn here, ...this far, no further! And I... will make them pay for what they've done!

Guinan: You broke your little ships. ...See you around, Ahab.

La'an: 'And he piled upon the whale's white hump, a sum of all the rage and hate felt by his own race. If his chest had been a cannon, he would have shot his heart upon it.'

Guinan: What?

La'an: 'Moby Dick.'

Guinan: Actually, I never read it. I preferred Mark Twain.

La'an: Ahab spent years hunting the white whale that crippled him. A quest for vengeance, ...but in the end it destroyed him and his ship.

Guinan: I guess he didn't know when to quit.

Touches of various episodes, including a Disaster subplot.

That said, am I crazy or were they referencing The Undiscovered Country with the score? Particularly the part where they find out that the Gorn ship is cloaked. Maybe that's my brain playing my tricks on me.

Jesus, that almost could get my 10, but I'm sticking with the 9.

This was this was on par for what I want from a modern Trek show. Well. Done.

Question/quibble that's not exclusive to this series a it's happened in other Trek series.

Why is it in Trek the "present day" doctors regard "our" medical practices as atchaic and not something that should still be practiced?

It's not like with today we laugh at Middle Age practices of drilling holes in people's head so they can bleed out to get rid of demons, doctors in Trek's time have scoffed at the idea of splints (in an episode of TNG) and here stitches. I'm sure there's others.

I mean, I would think the notion of stitches and splints would be common "field medicine" for cases where modern resources aren't available.

But here stitches are regarded as "archeological medical practices" a nurse is unlikely to be aware of.

Huh?

Gorn Captain: I can see you Pike!

Pike: Gorn!

Gorn Captain: Can you see me? Oh now, be honest, Captain. Warrior to warrior... you do prefer it this way, don't you? As it was meant to be. ...No peace in our time. 'Once more unto the breach, dear friends.'

Spock: :vulcan:

La'an: I always wondered if the Gorn trashed my family's complete Shakespeare book or actually stole it and read it. Now I know.

I assume it's the equivalent of a doctor now using techniques from 300 years ago, which may still work but no one would actually use.

Then again, even now, don't people glue wounds together instead of stitching them?

Why is the photon torpedo lit up like a christmas tree?

An object moving faster than light appears to have stopped? Wouldn't it appear to have vanished?
