Only thing not granting it a higher score was the overabundance of technobabble. 8/10 for me.
It wasn't that bad at least it made sense to me at least, but I'm a historian not a scientist. Late TNG and VOY got terrible technobabble that even I knew didn't make since.

Oh it made sense, sure. But still a lot of TECH the TECHING going on. Just a personal preference on my part that I don’t like the babble of the tech.

As long as I can fallow the tech teching its fine with me
Also, SF debris reference? he likes to say "tech teching a lot" when they just come up with random science

Am I right in thinking that the person who says "previously on Star Trek Strange New Worlds" ends up being sort of the main character of the story? Uhura for E2, Una E3 and now La'an E4.

I'm just glad they shut up the nitpickers beforehand. Not showing the gorn was a deliberate move to get fans to be a little less annoying. I stopped nitpicking trek a long time ago, it doesn't really do any good
Yeah... I really think we're all going to be better off if we loosen up on the canon stuff. :)

If only they had a shield bubble. They could have extended it over the other ship
Yup, sadly that's 24th century level tech.

Right now they have Skin / Conformal Shields.

A Shield type that StarFleet seems to waffle back & forth on between the 23rd & 24th century.

We see the Enterprise-D with Bubble Shields.

We see the Enterprise-E with Skin Shields.

When will see the next Enterprise have "Both Type" of Shields simultaneously?

It's only a matter of time =D

Hey! Let's drop something from up high on the Gorn! It worked before. Sort of.

The Gorn are the new Hirogen! Yet they have a new weakness--gullibility!

They do like laying traps, don't they?

The Enterprise survives the encounter without firing a shot. No pew-pew. Just can-do!

It must be after Tuesday, they have spark generators on the bridge now :guffaw:

But chunks of metal instead of rocks??? That is not teh sacred canon!

I really liked this ep. I am a sucker for an interesting space battle, especially when they make it like a submarine battle. There was good tension and some good character moments. I liked the scenes with Hemmer and Uhura. And I appreciate that Pike and the crew found creative solutions to survive rather than some cheap technobabble solution. I also really like that the show is making the Gorn into a legit, menacing threat. We never see a Gorn which makes them even more terrifying.

Impressive episode.

Some random thoughts:

- The music is just blowing me away. They threw in some TUC cues here. Amazing.

- Just when you think that crew member died in vain due to bad writing, it turns out that little added distance deeper into the gas layer ends up destroying the Gorn ship. Well done.

- Seems like La’an has a little bit of a thirst for revenge, maybe it’s a familial trait. ;)

- This was one of the best cat and mouse space battles in all of Trek, right up there with TWOK and TUC.

- I just love how professional and competent the crew is. Don’t get me wrong, I like a little eccentricity here and there in characters. But they’ve managed to make everyone capable and interesting at the same time. Very well done.

Just finished watching. 10/10. If anyone was worried about the Gorn being too silly, this has put that fear to rest. Some highlights:

- Very TOS "battle" score when the Gorn ship arrived right before the opening credits.
- Man in Skant has been promoted from "something we use to wink-wink hint at futuristic gender-neutral fashion but we aren't brave enough to show off front and centre" (see: TNG) to a full-fledged bridge officer!
- Every main character had a role in the story despite the focus on La'an.
- They did not kill Kyle!
- Subtle tie-ins to Discovery: Spock's meld with La'an, and I like to imagine Pike was wearing a Discovery remembrance pin. I'm glad they haven't tried to gloss over SNW's origins.
- Pike's cheesy reaction of "oh no" when he couldn't do the "Generic Trek Battle Thing" of raising shields set the scene well for an unusual BOT-style fight
- Gorn were fleshed out and IMO made a lot more interesting without clashing too hard with Arena
- "Next time they won't catch us by surprise" ok Chris

This episode felt like classic Trek through and through.
