My only quibble is the M'Benga storyline...why would he keep his daughter's situation a secret? Does he really not think anyone in Starfleet would help him out with this? Granted, there may be moral implications of intentionally keeping someone stored in a pattern buffer like that but still...why hide it?

My guess is starfleet would not allow him to do so on the flagship of the federation, if he was on earth that would be different. Likely did not want to take the chance they would deny him and since there seems to be no cure for her condition, he saw this as his only way to protect her and find a cure and did not want starfleet to interfere with it.


On the topic of the episode as a whole, i enjoyed it. I am really liking the episodic feel to the show. and the ship itself, i love the redesign. As for Una.. Is she like part human, part illyrian and perhaps thats why starfleet did not realize or did she just never have a genetic test done in her career? I mean in ENT, assuming those illyrians are the same, they are depicted as not being some lost human colony as was suggested earlier in the thread.

Also, seeing as this show doesn't have the "we haven't built the model yet" excuse as in "The Enemy Within"...why couldn't Pike and Spoke be picked up via shuttlecraft?

For what it's worth Illyrians are a real life group from centuries ago whose descendants comprise modern day Albanians and south Slavs. So assuming Trek's world is mostly the same as our world (and it is usually), then Illyrian already has different meanings other than the aliens on Enterprise.

I still think not naming Kyle as Sulu instead was a bit of a missed opportunity. We could have had a quick fight scene between him and La'an (as Sulu's hobbies were in martial arts) before La'an gets the bigger fight between herself and Una.

Pike: So I'm very curious now, who is strongest, a half-Vulcan, an Illyrian, or an augment descendant. Number One, La'an, Spock can you all meet me in the gym and fight it out so I can find out? Also, Dr. M'Benga take some of La'an's blood because um, you never know I just might need it for, um, some reasons almost a decade from now.

Is she so insanely strong, though? She picked up Hemmer in a fireman's carry: something a normal human male in decent physical shape should be able to do, no problem. Did we see her do anything that represented something like 5x normal human strength? (As advertised for Augments)

I think the answer to this is that he was afraid to risk that someone might tell him no — same as Una. Such is life in a large bureaucracy.

One thing I’ve noticed from these three eps is that SNW is taking traditional Trek plots and subverting them into service of character and themes. I didn’t find the handwavy solution to the “infection of the week” terribly satisfying, but it was almost beside the point. The real story was about the value of acceptance, diversity and trust. And that was pretty great.

Will need to watch again to determine my final score. This one might bump up on rewatch.

I don't know what subversion is going on, we basically are getting Bashir's genetically augment "secret" all over again.

I'm still waiting for "Star Trek: Fashion Division", Kurtzman. The first workplace sitcom in the Trekverse. It'll be great!

After sleeping on it, I think the reveal that Una is an Illyrian didn't land for me because the foreshadowing all seemed to be pointing to something totally different -- there was nothing at all for most of the episode to indicate that her orange glowing skin and squirrely behavior re her own symptoms were due to her having unique biology, so once it was revealed that there were mystery glowing orange energy beings in the storms, the obvious implication seemed (to me) to be that the infection eventually turns you into energy and that a.) that's what happened to the colonists, and b.) Una had advanced symptoms of transformation that somehow petered out, pointing the way to cure.

It all seemed slightly like poor or confusing setup to me, something the writers could have made clearer. Or at least picked some other colors to distinguish the energy beings and Una's Magic Immune System (TM).

WRT to M'Benga and his daughter- I think also that a transporter is an extremely expensive, power-hungry piece of gear. I doubt a starfleet doctor could afford his own personal one in order to store his daughter in the pattern buffer- an activity I highly suspect might be illegal to start with.

Of course, I could be wrong. The economics of the 23rd Century remain a little fuzzy to me... Have they truly reached a 'post-scarcity' phase as seems to be the case in TNG? It's another one of those things that keeps getting warped by Plot...

This is a great fanwank for why we never see Denobulans (chronologically) after Enterprise, aside from that tiny Lower Decks cameo. That actually could be a great story to tell someday, the falling out between the cultures -- like, the Denobulans were among the first aliens to show up to help the humans for their first forays into space, and then they get pushed out of the cool new club because their way of life doesn't play by human rules?

Genetic modification is banned? You literally did it in the first episode. .

TEMPORARY genetic modification is fine. It's the permanent stuff that'll get you in trouble.

Did La'an always know Una's true heritage, or are they suggesting she found out in this episode? If the latter, she was nowhere near sickbay; how did she know (if she didn't already)?

My assumption was that she overheard Una's confession after coming to and before leaving sickbay.

Boy, everyone on that ship has a deep dark secret!

I particularly can't wait to find out whatever crazy backstory Ortegas has going on. Is she actually the diabolical Future Guy from Enterprise? The only Soong in a thousand years who doesn't look exactly like Brent Spiner?

7. Had to laugh. Pike's quarters take up half a deck; poor Cadet Uhura has to sleep in a pod and share a room with at least two roomates. Rank hath its privileges, eh?

Beyond was almost nothing like the first 2 films, and it was a really damn fine trek movie.

JJ had really nothing to do with it only sharing a producer role because it was his production company. He left the movie to the writers and director.

I saw it once, like the other two. I agree that it was better than the first two, but I still didn't care for it. JJ-Trek, its characterizations, and its production designs are just not my cup of tea. I hope the people that want more of it get their wish- no hate.

I don't think it's worse than Nemesis, but it is bad I agree. I'd rather watch it again than Nemsis.
