I think Engineering is basically just one open room in this refit of the ship. By TOS the main core is separated by the mesh screen with other elements under the deckplates so I think the room is the same volume overall, just with more bulkheads added in the coming years.

I second the sentiment that this was the weakest of the 3, but since the first 2 were so strong that's not in any way saying it was bad. My only quibble is the M'Benga storyline...why would he keep his daughter's situation a secret? Does he really not think anyone in Starfleet would help him out with this? Granted, there may be moral implications of intentionally keeping someone stored in a pattern buffer like that but still...why hide it?
Also, seeing as this show doesn't have the "we haven't built the model yet" excuse as in "The Enemy Within"...why couldn't Pike and Spoke be picked up via shuttlecraft?

The shuttlecraft question may be because of TOS. We know the ship has them but they possibly didn't use them so the plot is more gripping and our main characters are put in greater danger. Not even a mention of the shuttlecraft.

It feels so much like early TOS. Now that you mention it I love it. It's awkward, but it's a beautiful storytelling route that just screams "1966 Star Trek" and its limitations.

Yeah, it wasn't enough to bother me. I brought it up to my non-Trekkie wife and she said she just assumed the storm was too dangerous to fly through. A quick line about it may have been nice but not exactly necessary.

For a second, I thought they brought on Timothy Chamolet (sp?) as a guest star.

See, for me it was the quirky eyebrow thing Tom does as Loki that this guy was doing, when he was looking in the cupboard.

And similar hair to Loki, etc. It was (of course) a very dark scene

I head canon "The Enemy Within(TOS)" as the shuttlecraft being under maintenance at the time of the Alfa 117 emergency or the weather on the planet's surface being too hazardous to risk sending one down.

Agree with some of the posts above: The storm looked like too much to fly a shuttle through, and it did preserve the TOS vibe of the whole thing.

260 years is a long time in the past to hold one accountable for the crimes of your ancestor. Even the first episode of TNG established that Earth under the New United Nations ruled that no person can be held legally accountable for crimes of their ancestors, made in 2037. Even when the globe was slowly falling apart the nations of the world passed some common sense rules.

The answer to what end is likely what I said earlier. They're setting up why Kirk ultimately ends up in command of the Enterprise, when the dust clears, instead of Number One.

That’s a great answer for the box that the series is written into being a prequel. But it still is a puzzling decision. Don’t mistake me, I’m enjoying it. Still… puzzling.

It's not too far removed from "the NX-01 has to be decommissioned before the Federation Charter is signed so that the canon of the NCC-1701 being the first Federation Enterprise is preserved." Even though that ship was only 10 years old and cutting-edge Earth technology in 2161.

I think that the technology curve for Earth went damn near vertical from 2151-2161.

In 2151, the NX class was the pinnacle of technology. But in a few short years, humans were making contact with the Andorians, Tellarites, Tandarans, the cogenitor guys, Orions, Nausicans, encountering the Romulans, and having increased interactions with Vulcan. I think a whole lot of technological learning was going on, and then to top it off there was the Romulan War, and we all know how wars jump-start technological leaps faster than anything else.

So I don't think it is unreasonable at all to assume the NX-01 would be decommed by 2161. On the contrary, I'd be shocked if it wasn't. I suspect that decade would be similar to the the period from about 1955-1965 in terms of military aircraft development in the United States: the old 'century series' where we were fielding new generations of combat aircraft like there was no tomorrow and then replacing them just a few years later with newer and better models.

Although the Franklin being in service in 2164 when it's clearly a smaller and more primitive starship begs the question of why the NX-01 was turned into a museum ship when older, less powerful vessels still hung around. I get why the series had to do it for continuity's sake but things like the Franklin do make it seem a little odd a choice in-universe.

I would not be surprised if Engineering were refit completely before Kirk's tenure to prevent a repeat of the events of this exact episode, where 1 insane crewmember was very easily able to cause a warp core breach.

Although the Franklin being in service in 2164 when it's clearly a smaller and more primitive starship begs the question of why the NX-01 was turned into a museum ship when older, less powerful vessels still hung around. I get why the series had to do it for continuity's sake but things like the Franklin do make it seem a little odd a choice in-universe.

Maybe the Franklin was a unique case just to give Balthazar Edison something to do. No wonder he was so bitter

I liked this episode. The fact that Pike and Una went to great lengths to protect their subordinates instead of throwing the book at them made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
I wish Uhura had more lines, but seeing the character development of M'Benga and Una was fantastic. Solid 10 for me. Maybe I'm being generous, but the B story was also interesting - the aliens turned into lightning - Peak Star Trek.
Any clunkiness I chalk down to gravitonic interference with the Paramount+ buffer.
