Lt.Kyle

We're in a thread arguing about their choices, so it can't be that safe.
With due respect to this fandom, that is the nature of fandom. Even with things that are simple they are made in to conflict.

I think that Star Trek is a big enough sandbox to handle all the Klingons, various Kyles and (if they are ever named as such) Colts and Enterprises. But, that is not the way of fandom.

I think of it like... okay, they had multiple actors playing Young Spock in Search for Spock. They cast people who had some resemblance to Leonard Nimoy because you were supposed to believe that they grew up into the guy at the end of the movie. It wasn't nostalgia that drove that casting, they weren't trying to play it safe to avoid a fan outcry, it was just basic consistency. Worf's son didn't have a radically different look to take advantage of modern makeup techniques, because you were supposed to buy him as being Worf's son.

If you put a guy called Kyle at the transporter, people are going to assume it's the same guy and wonder why he looks so different. They could've solved this by being creative and thinking up a new name.

You mean the six people who both a) know who Kyle is and b) give a fuck.

About the same amount who know who M'Benga is..... yet they cast an actor that resembles the original M'Benga.....hmmm interesting...

Wonder why M'Benga was not changed into an Orion...????

I don't see much resemblance. The actor for M'Benga strikes me as not quite matching up with the TOS version.

So, those people are keeping track, like with a check list?
We both know that at least someone out there has a checklist going!

But what I'm saying is, the only people who'd even recognise the Kyle easter egg are people who already know about Kyle, so it's a change for the benefit of no one.

I think they've done a more than reasonable job with the casting there. The beard helps.

About as close as the actor who plays spock to the original spock..

He does have a beard though....
Neither quite strike me as the original. The current actor for M'Benga feels too old.

It's honestly just struck me as a fun little Easter Egg.

Which reminds me of the wonderful meme about Trek fans and sense of humor.

Eh, I really don't think he lands it well. I think it is a poor fit.

Yeah, I don't see much of a resemblance between M'Bengas either. Anson Mount is the only one playing a returning character I thought resembles the original much.

I knew who Kyle was. I was not aware of this thread before watching the episode. When I saw him, I thought 'cool.' Then I thought, uh-oh, he looks Asian. There is going to be backlash. Lo and behold it was already there.

He does a bit in the face but his hair is way thicker. I do like Anson for Pike. Great actor. I loved Hell On Wheels. For those that have not seen it....WATCH IT. It's a great show and also stars another Trek Actor. Colm Meaney. who has a large role in the show and does an awesome job as well.

My guess is it was an open casting call for a transporter chief, and someone along the way decided to name the character Kyle as an Easter egg. No reason to assume someone wanted to cast Kyle and then decided to make Kyle Asian. And if they did, that's cool too, but there's an assumption of pre-meditation that is unwarranted.

Yeah a little bit, but that was inevitable when they made him the chief medical officer instead of a young lieutenant.

I... don't get the joke.

It doesn't matter when the decision was made, it was still a decision they made.

At the very least, couldn't he have been Asian with a British accent? It was literally the one defining characteristic for the character.
