Lt.Kyle

Yeah a little bit, but that was inevitable when they made him the chief medical officer instead of a young lieutenant.

I... don't get the joke.

It doesn't matter when the decision was made, it was still a decision they made.

A choice, yes.

A change (your original word)... not necessarily. My point is that they created a character, and may have had the intention of making them the same character as TOS Kyle, or they just named him after that character. Unless they give some kind of hint that he is the same character (not much they could do to indicate so, I'd think), it's assumption on a viewer's part.

April and Kyle have nothing on X-Men's Trask.

Colt... probably about par.

Last Stand and Wolverine were removed from continuity by the producers before this movie, IIRC. Just like Superman Returns replaced 3/4, and some of the Terminator shenanigans.

Trek producers still insist all is Prime.

At the very least, couldn't he have been Asian with a British accent? It was literally the one defining characteristic for the character.
Or it's just another guy named "Kyle". Could be there are more Kyles than we know. He's seen in red, gold and blue in TOS and there's some guy with a moustache in TAS that used the name!

About the same amount who know who M'Benga is..... yet they cast an actor that resembles the original M'Benga.....hmmm interesting...

Wonder why M'Benga was not changed into an Orion...????

Because they don't want to.

And dude, you don't get away with "hmmm interesting..." You now explain exactly why you find that so interesting, or we have every right to assume that we already know. And it's a pretty ugly look.

I think of it like... okay, they had multiple actors playing Young Spock in Search for Spock. They cast people who had some resemblance to Leonard Nimoy because you were supposed to believe that they grew up into the guy at the end of the movie. It wasn't nostalgia that drove that casting, they weren't trying to play it safe to avoid a fan outcry, it was just basic consistency. Worf's son didn't have a radically different look to take advantage of modern makeup techniques, because you were supposed to buy him as being Worf's son.

If you put a guy called Kyle at the transporter, people are going to assume it's the same guy and wonder why he looks so different. They could've solved this by being creative and thinking up a new name.

We have a Lieutenant Mitchell at the navigator's station - Lieutenant Jenna Mitchell. No one is yet confusing her with Gary Mitchell or suggesting that she's Gary before deciding to undergo gender reassignment surgery, although, if they decided to go that route, yay, MORE representation to make heads explode.

They should give Kyle a first name then! The original Kyle never got a first name, so that'll make it obvious that they're completely different people :p

Personally I think they should've called him Winston. That's an easter egg people could appreciate.

I got !!
"Kyle" is just a nickname given all transporter chiefs!
Kyle is the male Karen, and he would very much like to speak to the manager of Starfleet.;)

(Apologies to all the Karens and Kyles out there, I've got one of each in the family)

Actually, its both. But the Klingon makeup was constantly modified in all the TOS films. Once TNG hit, even Worf's look changed from season to season. So no, the 'look' of the Klingons was never stable post TMP.
It was stable enough that I never even gave it a second thought.

Indeed. And, to me, that's how art should be when dealing in speculation. This isn't historical recreation but exploration of new life and new civilizations. Adding variety is expected, at least for me.

Dude, the more you harp on the fact that they changed the character's race ... the more you're making your posts sound like they are bordering on a person with bigoted ideals.

You might want to ease up on that a bit, it's not a good look.

Lmao. Not in the least. I grew up with this show. It was one of the most diverse shows on the air at the time. If I were a bigot or racist. I would not be a Star Trek fan. You are trying to strengthen your point by pulling out that old chestnut.

I don't mind the diversity on the show. It has a very diverse cast. What I dont like is changing characters that are ALREADY ESTABLISHED. This is supposed to be the same story. Correct??? Why make a change like that? Why not create a new character??? If they want to be so creative they need to BE creative. As much as I dislike Discovery for things it has done wrong....THAT is one thing they got correct. They made some NEW interesting characters.
If Kyle is so insignificant to so many of you.....WHY IS HE EVEN ON THE SHOW??? Apparently the producers knew who he was so he can't be that insignificant. Right??
