Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

but there is no way those butterflies changed his race.
Why not, perhaps nuApril's great grand father married a black women, they had mixed race kids, one of them also had a black partner who had black looking kids,a few generations later, hence brown skinned Robert April.
Happens every generation in real like, those butterflies are powerful little suckers!
Skin colour issue solved!

So apparently I was reading one of the reviews and they spoiled that PIKE HAS A WIFE!!!!
Do you have a link? Where was she during his accident? Everything going on with Vina now looks very different. I hope this wife walks out on him or something so that Pike's story with Vina can stay intact. If what you say is true this is far more damaging to TOS than anything we've seen so far.

"Damaging?" to TOS?

People keep using words that I don't think mean what they think it means.

onestly it would have been more refreshing if they cast someone from Turkey, or Greece, or Iran for the diversity hire.
You get phrases likes this because in some people's subconscious, they truly believe white people are the default humans and everyone else is diverse....(sigh I wish Wakanda was a real place, I would migrate tomorrow!)

Unfortunately even in other countries people manage to find hierarchies. As a Chinese American my parents spoke a relatively unknown dialect https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taishanese that's looked down on by a lot of Chinese people (in the event they'll even acknowledge knowing about it) because it signifies my heritage as being from the lower, "uglier" classes of Chinese and not the mainstream Mandarin speaking people who are the "default" Chinese. You isolate one race to itself and they'll still find ways to look down on people who look basically like them. Also the Indian caste system for example.

"Diversity hire."

You mean like Kirk being a father was 'damaging' to the movies?????

The world has numerous countries where the vast majority of the population are black. You don't need to go finding Wakanda

Solution - change his background. If fans can swallow a British agent with a Scottish, Irish, Yorkshire, London accent, a black Bond from London, Birmingham or any major cit or even the Caribbean is no big deal. Make him the son of a wealthy black (b)millionaire, they do exist in RL. Or keep the background, go back three generations and there are black folks with a white ancestor for 'historical reasons'. There is a valid reason why millions of us have European surnames.

You certainly could change his background, but at a certain point when is he no longer James Bond, but a new character with the same name? He's not the blank slate April is. I don't know where that line is. I do know that making a new character and putting a legacy name on them to ensure box office performance is intellectually dishonest.

Wouldn't that mean Black Panther is not a diverse movie, as the vast majority of the cast are the same race?

I misread that as "having" a father. I was like wow how does that break canon, was Kirk a "tank" in TOS.
I don't see Kirk quite the same way the way he chatted up all those ladies in TOS now knowing he knew all along that he had a failed relationship and basically a fatherless son (because Carol told him to get lost) as a result. That hangs over someone, or would to me at least.
