Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I stated what was incorrect in my original post upthread on TNG S2 - "The Emmisary". You seem to think that makes no sense (or you didn't really bother to read it); so I'm not going to sit here and try to explain something I've already explained.
In the context of this conversation you explained it without any specifics, so I'm not going to guess what you think they are just because you don't want to repeat yourself. And without specifics, you have no argument.

No. I don't like race recast regardless of whatever race is being cast. .. So..no

I completely agree. This was established by TAS, which is canon, right down to giant Spock being referenced on Lower Decks. We've been explicitly told all of the animated shows are canon. We have seen him and his wife, Sarah. Why couldn't this have just been Captain Stone? Its not about race, and I'm tired of being told that it is.

I can handwave most changes because I think the Nu-23rd century is a rewrite of the timeline after First Contact, but there is no way those butterflies changed his race.

How is the color of his skin important to his character? Where was Robert April born? Huh? What's that? FUCKING NOWHERE? He has NO BIOGRAPHY? Okay.

His skin color is visual fucking continuity and if the interior of the Enterprise can change so can his skin. If you can't get on board with that change I have a feeling the rest of the show will alienate you and I'm 100% on-board with it. Get lost.

It is, because you can't come up with a complaint about Holmes' difference in appearance from the cartoon other than his race that would phase you for an instant. What, he has a beard? He's more balding than the cartoon character? Don't bullshit me. You'd shrug all that off.

I can handwave most changes because I think the Nu-23rd century is a rewrite of the timeline after First Contact, but there is no way those butterflies changed his race.

All you are talking about is that he's the "wrong" race - that nonsense about butterflies and changing, etc. is addressing race and nothing else.

Don't try to piss on my head and tell me it's raining. The change in race bothers you; you just said so. No other difference does.

I love all the little quips in the various trailers:

Pike: "...we have a planet to save before Breakfast..."
--
Ortegas: "...First date or third date?"

Pike: "Blind date."

Ortergas: "Proceeding with caution..."

It's very modern, for sure. Not necessarily a bad thing, mind you.

It's one thing to complain about "woke" changes going too far, but when ANY change or addition towards minorities is being complained about, one sure wonders where it comes from.

Addition is great. Changing established backstory is not. Why does it have to be about minority or race? I would have been *beyond* happy with a big role for Captain Stone. I've never heard anyone complain about Sisko being non-white. I would fight and complain just as much if they recast him as any other race. NONE of this has ANYTHING to do with race. If they had announced this as a full reboot, you wouldn't be hearing the HINT of a complaint from me.

I can explain away the visual differences with time travel. This one has no good explanation, other than change for the sake of change, and contradicting what came before.

What counts as established backstory? Props? Uniforms? Ship design? Sets? Actor's faces? Or is it just skin colour, here?

Why does it have to be about minority or race?
Because you've made a complaint about race. As Serveaux said, if it was a mustache or other difference no one would be complaining. Did you notice M'Benga was a very different skin tone than the TOS version? No one seems to have batted an eye at that.

Addition is great. Changing established backstory is not.

Rest assured, no backstory is changed where April is concerned.

Or perhaps you mean something other than backstory.

I've never heard anyone complain about Sisko being non-white. I would fight and complain just as much if they recast him as any other race. NONE of this has ANYTHING to do with race.

And yet, your complaint here is with the actor's race, and nothing else.

It makes no difference whether April is played by a white or a black actor. None.

When it is a completely different character than the one that has already been established, how is that not changing backstory? Obviously that includes race, but to think that ANYONE has a problem with the character because he is a black man is ridiculous. Make a character. Use Stone. I'm sure the actor is going to play a great role. But its not Robert April.

I have a lot of problems with their use of M'Benga, including his age, but his race does not bother me - because it is still true to what has already been established.

Would it be okay if in a recasting, Picard became Asian? Or even German, or Finnish, instead of French/British? With no explanations?

I would complain equally as loud.

STOP SAYING ITS PRIME. JUST ADMIT THAT IT IS A REBOOT AND NO ONE WOULD HAVE ANY OF THIS TO BICKER ABOUT.
