Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

If the alternate timeline take works for you fine. But frankly you are holding something against this Star Trek show that every Star Trek show has been guilty of. There's never been 100% tight continuity in the Star Trek franchise. Even the original series contradicted itself.

The one key difference is that, for the most part, previous contradictions are accidental. The redesign of the Klingons being the only deliberate contradiction I can think off the top of my head. And the new Klingons were just as controversial as the new Enterprise when they debuted.

Redesign of the Trill. Not just their appearance, but biological functions as well. In Next Generation, aside from having a "forehead of the week", joined Trill were not able to use transporters... I guess DS9's in a different continuity than the Next Generation...

Oh dear

wokeness, wokness, wokness so apprently spoilers below, please dont read.

Chapel is bisexual in SNW, like really?
And so Kurtzman Trek continues:shrug: they have learned nothing from discovery.

That kind of stuff is completely incidental to the quality of the show. If Discovery and Picard actually had good stories no one (mostly) would bring up the traits of the characters as a complaint.

Create new characters, dont retcon established characters who did not show any of these big traits you are trying to add in a prequel story about them.

1- Why should they have "learned" this lesson from Discovery? What problems did it cause for them?
2- Does her being bi contradict anything we know of the character? Is it important?
3- Hell, a lot of woke stuff annoys me sometimes, but the reactionaries are a lot worse: if Chapel was shown to be claustrophobic, or bulimic, would you consider that a "big" trait that was never shown before and should not be added, or does your disdain for these traits only extend to sexual orientations?

I knew there were others I was forgetting. But my point is, people complain about deliberate contradictions every time, until they get used to it. The new Enterprise is no different. Besides once they start the Kirk series with the new ship, and explicitly overwrite the original look, this will be small potatoes.

This is true, but I wish to holy HELL they would get over this incestuous, 'small-universe' syndrome. There is NO NEED for Sam Kirk (of any rank), M'Benga, Uhura, Chapel, or Robert April to appear on this show in any way, shape, or form. All it is is a mild form of fan service that creates more irritation than anything else (especially with me). Star Wars is the worst with this crap, to be fair.

You could have exactly the same actors in these roles with different names, and it would clear up all canon issues AND allow them the freedom to develop new characters in whatever direction they wish to take them. But... nope.

Also, shouldn't Samuel Kirk be a lieutenant commander or a full commander at this point? J.T. Kirk is either in the academy or just commissioned himself, isn't he?

Sam wasn't even in Starfleet in TOS but was a civilian scientist working on Deneva. Which, fine, Sam can resign his Starfleet commission and go to live with his wife and son Peter on Deneva within the next eight years but him being in Starfleet and on the Enterprise of all ships six years before his brother takes command as Captain is a bit of a curve ball.

Mmm... Sam Kirk maybe shouldn't be there, I would agree, but the others were all established TOS/TAS characters whose existence on-board the ship should start somewhere. Why not in SNW?

I wonder if Sam will be sporing his 60s/70s pornstache. Even better, they should write him to make him more of a man-whore than his brother Jim before he settles down on that little colony and getting his brains scrambled. :D
