I'm learning that many have that opinion.

I do not share it. My Star Trek experience has been filled with disappointment in Trek shows and I walk. No franchise, no matter how much I like it, deserves my time if I don't like it.

That's amazing! Over 800 episodes of Star Trek and you've loved every minute of it! That has to be some kind of record or achievement or medical condition or something!

EDIT: SORRY - Just realized I took away the exact opposite of what you said. Funny - I reread it 3 times, and it wasn't until I walked away and came back that I read it correctly. Makes me wonder how many other times something like that has happened... :(

I feel you. It took quite some doing to get me to bail on Discovery, but by the third season I just couldn't any more.

A weird feeling though; I've loved everything Trek was and has been, from TOS up to Enterprise. Feeling so disappointed by a universe I've always loved exploring was a strange, strange experience. You invest a lot in it as a fan; to have it moved so far from what made it work for you is a sad shame. Like those bands that should have stopped several albums ago!

I mean, I get that, but I had that experience with TNG and TMP. So, I had this experience much earlier in my fan career, including the mocking by other Trek fans for liking one aspect of Trek but not another.

For me, I am the person who makes my who fandom. I don't need a show to do it. I've done it with Star Wars, Stargate and Star Trek because these franchises rarely work for me in any perfect sense. There are parts that I just walk away from.

Music is a nice way to describe it. I have a band that I absolutely love and have their first album. But, I haven't bought every album because it doesn't always work. Sometimes its good and sometimes it's terrible. What keeps me going is find those parts that I enjoy and maximizing them, rather than lamenting loss. Because I still have good times, and memories.

Well, I loved Stargate Sg1, I loved Stargate Atlantis, Now Stargate Universe.. I didn't like Universe, it was totally different from the previous series, it wasn't hopefull, it wasn't fun, it went that grim / dark like Galactica. and it sucked because of it. I didn't care about the crew, except for the main scientist, and the kid.. the rest could have been spaced and i wouldn't have shed a tear. and I stopped watchting after the first season. and still havent watched the 2nd.
Now, with trek, there have been some stinker episodes, even seasons. But on a whole, its been a great ride. I may have my quips, but I'm happy with it. and have watched every episode of every season of every series ( except TAS..)

And you're a more stalwart fan than I. I have not watched every episode of Trek, and probably won't.

Stargate, same deal. I'm not a completionist. I hope SNW continues this trend for you.

I actually finished Voyager last year. I had given up on it around season three or four.

    I'm with ya there.
Also didn't care for "SG:UNIVERSE" and I only made it through the first season of "Reboot GALACTICA".
(but saw all of the original's episodes)

On the other hand, I've seen every single episode/movie/cartoon of Star Trek produced and 99.99% of it was when it first premiered.
(I missed one episode of VOYAGER due to VCR problems at the time, but eventually caught it in repeat)

To me, that's what being a 'FAN' of something is all about.
Don't necessarily think it all was great, but I enjoyed watching it.

I rewatched everything from TOS to VOY a few years ago. I'd seen TOS episodes more than once, but the 80/90's Trek I'd only seen when it originally aired.

    My overall reactions were:
    1. Voyager wasn't as bad as I remembered it. Definitely some stinker episodes, but overall not awful.
    2. TNG was worse than I remembered it. Not bad, just not as good as my memory suggested. Definitely lots of highlights, but wasn't miles above Voyager, really. (The remastered visuals were amazing, though.)
    3. TOS is TOS - lovable, warts and all. The most painful part was the heavy sexism present even as they strived to be better than that. (A lot of the remastered original film elements were gorgeous. It's too bad there was so much variation shot-to-shot, where one scene looks spectacular and the next is a fuzzy, faded mess in comparison.)
    4. DS9 was incredibly good. I was heartbroken for days when it was over. I'd say it's the most deserving of bringing back, but it'd be impossible do it as well as they already did.

I won't begin to even try and tag anybody else personally.

The more I learn of how fans define fan status the more I feel confident saying I'm not a fan.

    It is what it is.

I am insatiable in curiosity, I ask a lot of questions. Star Trek is not so sacred that I won't question everything about it.

And apparently I come across as a joyless stick in the mud. So I own it. At this point fandom has nit impressed me with warmth and acceptance.

So, people will assume I have no joy. Good enough.
