I don’t think they have decided yet, so it could end or continue.
makes sense. Especially with those beautiful starship sets that so far have been used only once around.

afaik renewal is only for the fifth and came after the fourth was shot.

By the way, we know they have at least two more series in development, one of those could easily replace Picard.

The current streaming paradigm is mysterious enough that it's hard to guess what the studio might decide, and on what basis.

Yes, even with as much money as they're throwing at Trek, there's a limit. There's a point at which to have a new series, an older one has to die.

OTOH, what they've found with STD is longevity. They're not getting that out of a limited run series like Picard. Unless whatever numbers they measure by now are falling off significantly, is there any reason for them to rock the boat?

There were formulas that applied to broadcast and to syndication that are meaningless in the streaming world. Seven years seemed to be ideal in terms of costs versus income for syndicated Trek. But Netflix has a tendency to cancel shows that are considered "successful" after a couple of seasons, reportedly because they see a fall-off in the number of new or reactivated subscriptions that accompany the series' premieres. Paramount+ has not been so aggressive.

    TL;DR: Who knows?

I recall reading ages ago that Section 31 would start when Discovery finishes. But that was a loooooong time ago, pre-SNW.

In the era of Trekkake, they will probably continue to make it until it becomes unprofitable.

I hope for season 5 they will create a story that is actually worth 10 episodes and not write a three parter story into a 10 hour thing. Season 4, which had its heart at the right place, was just too boring and predicatable at times. The emotions of the crew were all over the place and when you have high stakes (killing off Booker, Discovery being stranded with no spore drive, destroying Earth etc.) and at the end all is well that ends well, is just not the way to go. It's like one big reset button, like nothing of consequence actually happened.

I'm a bit behind on all this. Are you referring to Section 31 and the proposed anthology show?

‪‪I believe the second series in addition to Star Trek: Section 31 being referred to is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Aside from the shows airing/known quantities there are only three Star Trek titles with currently active trademarks for streaming/television, the two mentioned above, and Star Trek: Revolution (as discussed here).

The anthology show is decidedly not in production, Goldsman clarified as much pretty much immediately after the sound bite of his answer to a question about what ideas he would want to do if he could was jumped on and misrepresented as something forthcoming/in development by clickbait sites.

This was really easy to miss, as the explanation that the series was just an idea of his and not happening at this point was reported on much less. It was even brought up in the thread dedicated to the idea twice after Goldsman clarified, almost two months apart.

With the ongoing reports of Starfleet Academy being in development, and the continual reaffirmations from Kurtzman and Paramount Re: Section 31’s active status, ‪‪I’d think they’re the series being referred to.

How about a combo Section 31 and Starfleet Academy show? S31 recruiting from SFA.

Though gimme a Temporal Investigations show over any of those others. Explore the madness between the 28th and 31st centuries.

Okay, cool, but how does that work? Since this could be both a series and a Tilly arc in S5 or beyond. And it hasn’t been established as to what time period Georgiou was sent to by the Guardian of Forever. That matters for a S31/SFA combo show.

This is it exactly. Why would Georgiou step through the Guardian of Forever and end up in the exact same timeframe she started in?

Must have been a fan idea but I remember reading that the Georgiou we see get killed in S1 was her from the future.

Since, apparently, the Q Continuum stopped interacting with humanity around the 26th century, it'd be nice if one of these new shows has them in it.

Even if it's Starfleet Academy, it would be neat if one of the enrollees turned out to be a Q who somehow managed to escape whatever happened to the Continuum and is hiding out, with limited powers, and trying to make a go of it as a bipedal alien.

Yes, we already got a taste of that in TNG's 'True Q', and maybe my idea is too fan-fictiony.

I suspect season 2 of Picard has already presented a possible explanation for why the Q Continuum is no longer heard from after the 26th century.

Well, I hope they at least explain it in further detail.

My theory is when Q changed the timeline he erased all the progress the Continuum had made w/ Voyager's help. Or perhaps something happened to them while Q de Lancie was off seeing about Picard?

My other theory is Q and his son picked up some sort of long gestating virus when they were human and it eventually infected the whole Continuum.

Discovery writers: Oh no, we wrote out the Q and have a perfect Q story!

Just like The Burn shook up everything from the technology to the alliances to the status quo, I took the writers going out of their way to say the Federation hasn't encountered a Q in 600 years as another way to further distance themselves narratively from TNG through PIC, since DSC jumped right over them completely.

Maybe Q is only really interested in Picard and Janeway? He never bothered with Sisko again after the one time.

It's a big universe with all of time to play in. I'm sure he bothers a lot of different races and individuals.

Spoilers for Picard Season 2. To anyone reading: don't click if you don't want to see them.
Given the way things are going in PIC Season 2, I think he's dead in DSC's permanent timeframe.
