Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

Man. Looking at the supposed titles for the first 5 episodes of this first season of SNW, it really hit home that this season is going to be so short. Even though LDS is only 10 episodes, it feels "ok" for an animated show (though I would prefer more). Conversely, due to pacing and story issues (meaning the serialization) DIS and PIC have often felt "too long" with too much filler at only 10-15 episodes. I think that I will enjoy SNW so much (based on what I have seen so far), that I will feel like we only get to scratch the surface with 10 episodes. That we will just be getting going with exploring these characters and this setting before we are already at the end of the season. I fear it will be a big letdown. I know it is not how most modern "prestige" shows do it, but 15-20 episodes (episodic) would be so much better.

No, it wouldn't. It would simply mean lower budgets and less time spent on each episode.

They're shooting season two as we post this stuff - they're at least on episode three, now, maybe into four. Relax.

Eh, I dunno. Given the large ensemble cast, I do feel like something is lost with only 10 episodes. Ideally you'd have enough space in the first season to have an episode with a character arc for each of the main characters. With 8 members of the main cast, that would give them just enough time (presuming an opening episode and finale which are more plot based) to flesh out everyone, but I am guessing that there were simply some good stories to be told as well, meaning we won't really get full character arcs for some until the second season.

I guess it's going to be a multi-season development, assuming the series sells well.

I think the same. Plus, I would only want that kind of background and development if it's within the course of a story. We don't need every single thing about every crew member known. Leave some things up to the audience imagination. IMO, there isn't a need to have episodes wasted just about one character. Leave that to something like Discovery, which seems to want to have that.

Honestly, with how Discovery and Picard are going with their 10 or more episode arcs, the production team is having trouble maintaining plot and interest as it is. I'm welcoming this return to single episodes.

Eh, I dunno.

There's no way around it.

And there's no reason to devote an episode or an arc to every single one. There are such things as supporting casts on TV shows. Keep the focus on the central characters.

One of the things I loved about Season 1 of DS9 is every main character got their own episode - for the most part in the first 12 episodes. Some of them weren't well-served by them (Bashir got shit at the beginning, and Dax's first outing wasn't great) but they all got their moment to shine.

That's true but that feels a bit formulaic. I prefer the character growth and exposition to be done through stories that focus on other things, organically.

Quark was insufferable in Season 1. There was not much I enjoyed in DS9 Season 1 save for Bashir and Dax, and occasionally Sisko.

After watching four seasons of Enterprise and Discovery recently I am definitely ready for the supporting cast to get plenty of focus stories. It's cruel to put these people in front of an audience and then give them hardly anything to do!

Yeah, this isn't DS9.

They get paid.

Giving people moments does not require giving them an episode.

The show has leads.

Cruel, eh?

It's so fascinating to see the emotional reactions around characters. I suppose "Balance of Terror" is cruel too by definition.

I don't want them to have moments though, I want them to have episodes.

No, TOS definitely pulled off having a strong focus on three core characters. I've been watching it simultaneously with Enterprise and Discovery and I've never thought 'man I wish they'd give Sulu or Scotty something to do' like I did with Reed or Hoshi, or Detmer and Owosekun.

Yes I know that Detmer and Owo are basically extras.

I was trying to understand the cruel aspect. But, I get that wishing for a character to do more. I wish that Giotto, Tomlinson, and Noel all got more to do in TOS' run.

But why, though? Take Riker, for instance. He has very few episodes focused on himself but he became one of my favourite characters because he grew as part of the story and his interactions with the other members of the crew.

That's probably because ENT did like TNG and DS9 and made a point of introducing each character like they were important, only to focus on a few of them and give Hoshi and Mayweather the cold treatment. TOS didn't make the first mistake so it doesn't quite feel like a missed opportunity.
