Discovery Renewed for Season 5

I find it telling the standard response from NuTrek fans, when people criticize NuTrek, boils down to "well, classic Star Trek was shit".

What is your point? What is your gotcha?
Classic Star Trek had bad episodes? Duh!
But unlike NuTrek fans, classic Star Trek fans were never in denial or had any illusions about that.
I didn't say 'classic Trek was shit..." - although I WILL say (and yes, I still watched it because it was the first new televised Star Trek for 13 years) that definitely TNG Seasons 1 and 2 WERE SHIT.

And I should know as I've been watching Star Trek first run (back when it was on NBC) since it's third season in 1969. My favorite Trek series is still the original. <--- Nothing except maybe ENT S4 and DSC S2 have come close to matching the home run hit with TOS S1.

No 'gotcha' involved - just my opinion (and no surprise that I DO think some Trek is shit in its 55+ year run - you can include ALL of VOY in the list for me too). But yeah, I wasn't the one assuming that because I do enjoy the current version of Star trek, I think all of what came before is shit..but he you know what they say when you assume...

nuTrek has shit.

It's part of the nature of art.

People didn't believe the numbers I posted from FlixPatrol.

Star Trek Discovery is not No. 1 in anything, not even Top 5.
Star Trek Discovery is the ninth topmost consumption driver on Paramount Plus.
No Star Trek show is on the list of top acquisition drivers for Paramount Plus.
Pretty bad for one of the most expensive shows.

1883 is already the second most acquisition driver on P+, and they only started airing on December 19, 2021 (that is why they are not on the consumption driver list).

Yeah who would have thought that a mainstream show that is a spin off of a critically acclaimed Kevin Costner series that appeals to a much larger audience than Star Trek ever will would be a big seller. Paramounts own CEO Bob Bakish has already stated how pleased he is with the subscriptions Discovery brought with it when they acquired it back from Netflix. The fact that the show was also renewed for a 5th season is also proof positive that Paramount is pleased with Discovery's performance, because as bizarre as it may sound to you studios don't spend money on tv shows that don't make them any.

We might have to wait another 6-7 hours for Pacific Standard Time morning to get his regular daily morning termination announcement.

Edited to add: I wonder why a series that had a bigger international audience than a domestic one suddenly isn't going "that great" (as if being in top 10 wasn't a good thing) on a platform that won't be available in most of that market until later this year (or even until next year in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East).

damn, I always mess up with the time zones.

I just received top-secret information from my trusted sources that he has, indeed, been fired (from his position and out of orbit), but the upcoming Star Trek shows will still credit him as the truth needs to be remain hidden at all costs.
mr Worf, fire all kurtzmen.

You are comparing wrong data. These images are about Paramount+ globally, in their current 25 markets and that except for the US, they didn't have the first 3 seasons. The statement about Discovery being the most watched original was valid only for Paramount+ in the US.

According to flixpatrol Discovery is currently the number 10 most viewed show on itunes WORLDWIDE. It was 6th on Friday. These are the only two dates I checked. It's currently #3 in the U.K.

I posted this a few weeks ago, but Discovery was the top show on Paramount Plus U.S. for 8 days in November and 17 days in December. It was third from this past Thursday - Monday with the new episode after the break. Yes, it's currently towards the bottom of the top 10, but I think the numbers above indicate the show is doing quite well, and was probably hurt a bit on Paramount by the hiatus (so far). These are all numbers from your source, flixpatrol.

You seem rather convinced that your opinion carries weight outside of your own head, I assure you that it doesn't. So the object reality is that you don't like Discovery and other people do, that's it. It's like claiming pizza is terrible because you don't like it.

Star Trek Discovery is the ninth topmost consumption driver on Paramount Plus.

According to the picture you posted, it's also the topmost Paramount + Original series consumption driver and the only Paramount + original to make into the top 10.

I also wouldn't expect Discovery to be an acquisition driver for 2021 since it began its 4th season and most fans of the show/Trek fans were probably already subscribed. And if you take a look at the pictures, there is no overlap at all between the acquisition drivers and consumption drivers.

Star Trek Discovery is not No. 1 in anything, not even Top 5.

From Paramount: "STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, the critically acclaimed series that returned this year for its fourth season, was the #1 most-watched original."

Really? The entire seasons? Encounter at Farpoint, The Big Goodbye, Coming of Age, Heart of Glory, Conspiracy, A Matter of Honor, Measure of a Man, Q Who, Peak Performance...

Honestly with respect to season 1, I only found the first 20 minutes of Conspiracy watchable, but of course it fell apart by the end

Had a group of friends over to watch the premiere of Encounter At Farpoint; we all thought it was hot garbage oh, and I was the only one who bothered to stick with watching other first season episodes hoping it would improve.

And yes I know the Big Goodbye won a critics award but it just goes to show that TV Critics don't care for science fiction. The only reason they liked it was because it was a form of bad film noir.

But yeah for me the first two seasons of TNG is garbage. You could tell they were grasping for straws when they brought in the female version of doctor McCoy (right down to her being an Old Country Doctor, and distrusting the Transporter. How they even tried to force a Spock / McCoy type of relationship between her and Data; data was never written like Spock oh, and Brent Spiner never played him like Spock, so all of her McCoy like dialogue came across pretty much as her abusing a naive innocent; so fortunately the writer's abandoned that pretty quickly.)

You have your opinion and I have mine.
