Discovery Renewed for Season 5

Three episodes before the season 4 final, Star Trek Discovery disappeared from the Paramount Plus Top 10 TV shows chart.

So what.... 1 week after the episode aired... no surprise.
What do you actually want to prove? Are you trying to convince people here that Discovery is so bad they won't tune in anymore?
Season 5 has already been decided, and the other series will also be renewed. So it's good enough for Paramount.

As a reminder,
  • Discovery is getting a season 5
  • Picard is getting a season 3, renewed ahead of season 2 airing
  • Lower Decks is getting a season 4, renewed ahead of season 3 airing
  • Prodigy is getting a season 2
  • Strange New Worlds is getting a season 2 renewed ahead of the show airing at all
  • There is discussion of Section 31, Starfleet Academy and the rumor that will never die, a Khan miniseries

The show’s been renewed for season five. It’s disappearing from the top ten won’t change that. My level of care as to whether or not it gets a season six is ridiculously low. If it gets renewed, more Disco. If it ends, then one of the other series being planned will take its place. Kurtzman Trek is here to say for the foreseeable future. This deep desire from some to see the current iteration fail is pointless. Even if everyone stops watching modern Trek, they’re not going to bring back the Trek of the Berman era. Trek will be done for quite some time. And the gap between ENT and Disco will seem like a blink.

You don’t have to like what they’re doing, but attempting to illicit fear in those who do? What a selfish, naive and frankly pathetic endeavor.

What's funny about the poster above and others like him is he spends all his time thinking about the new shows and trying to convince themselves they are failures when we have at least 5 seasons of Discovery, 3 seasons of Picard, at least 2 seasons of Strange New Worlds, at least 4 seasons of Lower Decks, at least 2 seasons of Prodigy, with the potential for more on the way. I think it drives them crazy when many said Discovery would be cancelled earlier on and kept on making up rumors about Kurtzman getting fired.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a season 6 of DISCO because I kind of expect the season renewal announcement to also state it will be the final season - but of course it doesn't have to.

With Picard wrapping up, they will move forward on Section 31 or Academy most likely. It would seem like a lot (too much?) to have 4 live action shows (and 2 animated shows) in production at the same time so I would think Discovery would wrap up before moving on the next one - unless they plan for longer breaks between seasons. If the Academy show is tied into Tilly and Discovery they it makes sense to move onto that whenever Disco wraps up.

He's trying to convince himself the show is a failure.

And that's good enough for me.

And again, no one is suggesting you have to love what they’re doing. And yeah, it’s disappointing that it’s dropped from the top ten for streaming on P+. But as others have said, the constantly reporting these numbers, which obviously are fine for Paramount, is simply a futile effort, at least here. Perhaps there are other communities who are far weaker in their will for this, that they might buy the sky is falling mentality.

But we’ve been through the dark times: through Enterprise and it’s cancelation, through the disappointment of Nemesis, through the few years with nothing before the Kelvinverse started. And we’re not a monolith. I get along with posters who hate the Kelvinverse, who hate Enterprise, who hate P+ Trek and I know others feel the same way. But we also don’t put up with the bullshit. We dealt with people more vocal than this current poster and their preaching the terribleness of whatever the current iteration of Trek that “really wasn’t Trek.” I mean how many have come here saying that Into Darkness or Beyond or any of Kurtzman Trek has been canceled, sometimes even before it aired? How many times have we read that JJ or Kurtzman has been fired? How many TVs has Kurtzman broke now? We’ve dealt with all of that. We've had our disagreements and at the end of the day? We have endured.

So, I will echo the others and ask the question: What IS your purpose here, @Char Kais ?

In fairness, all kind of bad quality TV gets renewed fairly frequently... so renewal is hardly a benchmark of a TV show quality... because whether or not a show gets renewed will depend on whether it has a high enough base of people watching it... and if it does, but the show is bad, that just demonstrates that people watching it don't really have high enough standards and will warch pretty much anything.

In some cases, shows can be of high quality, but amass a lower amount of people who actually watch it, leading to its cancellation.

So could it still get canceled? Is season 5 still happening? How about the rest of season 4? Would they show the remaining episodes if the show is not in top 10 on a random day of the week?

I don't think how the show ranks is what they're concerning themselves with. Sure, it may be a factor in this day and age, but its probably not the only one.

I'm guessing they are tallying the amount of times the show gets streamed and contrast that to the number of actual subscribers.
If the numbers are high enough, it gets a renewal.

The fact Trek shows have been renewed well ahead of airing of upcoming seasons probably just shows that the amount of people watching Disco is consistently high enough.

I'm also guessing that despite the fact shows have been renewed, they can still get unexpectedly cancelled.

Well said. I’ve been critic of discovery in many occasions, but I definitely don’t like this kind of “all is about to fail” approach, especially when it has zero basis in reality.

I gather season 5 is filming, so, bar unexpected tragedies, it’s definitely happening.

‪‪I don’t believe that Season 5 is scheduled to start filming until this summer, but it’s happening, barring some totally random derailing.
