Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

"Noonien Singh" could be like a future version of "Castro" or "Assad". Having baggage, but also not necessarily being as uniformly despised as "Hitler" or "Stalin". I'm not 100% up on my TOS lore, but weren't they also praising the guy quite a bit? In a Napoleon bad-but-also-impressive-way?
Yes, McCoy and Kirk both stated positive things about Khan, largely that he maintained the peace without mass killings or something along those lines.

Unless we are assuming that a name in of itself automatically creates a specific destiny I think that this character could be interesting in their own right. It's an odd choice, but Star Trek loves its small universe.

There was also a Mr. Singh in the Enterprise crew in TOS, in "The Changeling." He's the Indian/South Asian-looking crewman checking on equipment in the laboratory where Nomad is listening to Uhura sing.

"Singh" is quite literally one of humanity's most common names. Imagine "Emperor Smith".

"Noonian" on the other hand? I think that's not even a real name, is it?

Maybe it's some type of title for the genetically superior? Like "Noonian Singh", "Noonian Wayne" and "Noonian Müller"?

Alright, I'll have to stop myself before entering the "Noonian" rabbithole. I've just found a mention of Gene's alleged WW2 buddy Kim Noonian Singh/Wang and ho boy, I don't have enough time to read through all that internet sleuthing before bedtime.

But yeah, I wonder what Noonian means in-universe, because most of what I've read points to Gene simply mishearing an actual South, Southeast or Eastern Asian name.

True, but Khan's name wasn't hyphenated and he's been called "Khan Singh" so Noonien is treated like his middle name. It may only take on any in-universe significance if SNW is doing something with it to connect her to Khan or genetic engineering or both.

Yeah, it's not what I would have done. I get some fans like that stuff but I'd have avoided it and still gone with the same or similar character beats.

Not everything in the galaxy has to be the product of tragedy.
It seems they feel the need to give a reason why someone would leave the Utopia of Earth to go out and experience the danger of space exploration.

That's a trope that seems to have started in the TNG days when it appeared every senior officer had some sort of tragic backstory oh, and Starfleet was the only place they could find peace and acceptance afterwards.

It made more sense for Spock in TOS, but he was always a fairly unique character compared to the rest of the cast.

THR:

She’s related to Khan, for sure, and, uh, and the deal will unfold…” Goldsman said. “We don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy. We want to dig deeply into characters that are part of our ensemble and then, obviously, we’re open to getting our arms … but right now, what you see is what you get.”

Good to see you back. It’s been awhile

Why does everyone have to be a thing. Cant we just have characters who dont have a memberberry backstory.
Well on the bright side she seems to bear no relation to Sarek

Yeah, I love Cumberbatch as an actor and many of his characters, but that was probably one of the worst case of miscast whitewashing in recent memory. True, Montalban wasn’t of South Asian/Siekh descent either, but at least he looked the freakin’ part!
Didn't they make his skin darker with makeup in TOS? His skin seemed a lot lighter in ST2.

They did, yes, but he wasn’t ever as Lilly-white as Cumberbach. I can’t even imagine the shitstorm that would have ensued if they’d have given the latter even the slightest tan.

Who are the confirmed orphans among the major characters?
TNG: Crusher
VGR: Neelix

Which Crusher? Wesley had his mom, and we know Beverly was close with her grandmother, but I don't remember her parents being mentioned either way. As for Neelix: he lost his family in the war, but I get the feeling he was a young adult by then.

I believe Beverly's parents were said to have died when she was a kid in "Sub Rosa". I could be wrong about Neelix.

My original point (which was admittedly unclear) was that the Star Trek orphans thing is overblown, and it's more about tragic deaths, as others have said. The minutiae of who counts as an orphan is not that interesting to me because rigid boxes in general are silly, and wasn't really my point.

Main characters with formative tragedies in their past (before their first appearance):
James Kirk - survivor of Tarsus IV, survivor of Farragut disaster
Leonard McCoy - had father euthanized but then cure developed shortly after
Nyota Uhura - *NEW* parents and brother died while she was young
Will Riker - mother died in his youth; abandoned by his father; survivor of Pegasus incident
Deanna Troi - father died in her childhood; had really obnoxious mother
Beverly Crusher - parents died in her youth; husband died young
Tasha Yar - orphaned; survived rape gangs
Worf - orphaned
Wesley Crusher - dad died in his childhood
Ben Sisko - wife killed by the Borg (technically this was depicted in his first appearance, but in a prologue sequence)
Kira Nerys - mother disappeared, likely as sex slave to Dukat; father killed by Cardassians; many, many friends died during her time in Resistance; she killed people herself as part of that effort
Odo - made misstep that cost innocent Bajorans their lives
Julian Bashir - genetically reengineered (without his consent)
Quark - father dead
Ezri Tigan - personality/mind rearranged when took unexpected symbiont transplanted
Jake Sisko - mother killed by the Borg
Kathryn Janeway - father died in her youth
Neelix - family killed in war crime in his youth
Seven - assimilated by the Borg as a child
Jonathan Archer - father died "unfulfilled"
T'Pol - father died; murdered a guy (don't really remember the plot; too lazy to look up)
Michael Burnham - parents killed as a child; in first appearance had a mother figure killed in part due to her own mistake
Saru - parents culled as part of species erroneous conditioning by slaver race
Ash Tyler - murdered and "reborn" as part of a Klingon
Adira - orphan? boyfriend died and they took his symbiont into themself, causing amnesia
Becket Mariner - friend eaten by her boyfriend
Dal R'El - orphan? enslaved
Jankom Pog - enslaved
Zero - force removed from people; enslaved
Rok-Tahk - enslaved
