M'Benga, uh, heads off to become chief of Starfleet Medical just before TOS. After it doesn't work out like Crusher a century later, he comes crawling back to the Enterprise. Unlike Pulaski however, McCoy sees no reason to just hand over the CMO job and tells M'Benga to take the second rank over by the corner. M'Benga later warns Kirk not to try this sort of gimmick in his future, but as we see in Star Trek the Motion Picture Kirk ignored the advice.

They've been an important part of trek ships because engineering has been a place where the action happens.

Go find The Illuminerdi's article about the show's character casting call sheet descriptions. M'Benga is clearly the character identified therein as 'Biodun' (despite the author of The Illuminerdi's article not recognizing that for some reason), and the same article identifies Christine Chapel - identified in the casting sheets as 'Miller' - as being his ('Biodun's') Nurse.
Hemmer would be my guess as chief engineer. And I don't see any need to include a tellarite, especially as there's one on Prodigy.
That is almost exactly how I feel except I didn't really get into Lower Decks until this season. As for this show I was excited to see the new cast. Now we just need to find out what Boyce is doing and I am guessing the Andorian might be the chief engineer since he wore a red shirt.
And in Picard and Lower Decks they're cramming in every reference to TNG (including TNG characters themselves) that they can with good success WRT the people watching (and the FC Data makeup/CGI in the final episode of Picard S1 looked HORRIBLE); and the fans want more of the same. Hell, Prodigy has Janeway as a holo character and people are loving that reveal.

Not true...there have been/are PLENTY of 'diverse' Canadians in their casts too.He might have been on temporary duty aboard the ship.
You know, having an African actor playing an apparently African character is quite the innovation for Trek. UK actors are usually about as diverse as they're willing to go.

Exactly. I'm always amused by the complaints of too many references and yet keep on buying the product. It's like if this isn't what you want Trek to be then the only way to communicate it is to pretty much ignore it. When they introduce Uhura in the video from yesterday, there's a shot of the bridge at 0:49s. On the display behind her is what appears to be something akin to the old wireframe graphic of the TOS-era Enterprise. Can anyone make out if the nacelle pylons are straight? I wonder if this modification will be made to appease the fans (since really, the whole series is for that purpose!).
Can't tell if the pylons are now straight like in TOS but the underside of the saucer section seems more curved and undulating like the TOS saucer section's underside.
I do wonder why Uhura is at the front of the bridge instead of her old spot. Could it be she is not a senior officer and someone else is the main communications officer at this point in her career? I know some speculation is the Andorian is the Chief Engineer but maybe he has the job Uhura will get someday.

Well, even though I've grown up with TNG era shows and only watched TOS in my twenties, seeing all this new stuff makes me really excited. I really liked Pike, Spock and Una on DSC, not to mention the reimagining of the Enterprise itself, so I'm very much looking forward to seeing them in action again.
I didn't have a problem with the repurposed dyed-in-primary-colors Discovery uniforms they had on DSC, so I don't actually think updating them was necessary, but it's perfectly understandable that a new production would want to stand out. They look good in any case, I love the department-logo stitching on the shoulders, and the lack of a black collar evokes The Cage a bit. Uhura and Chapel were definitely people I've counted on seeing again, the inclusion of M'Benga isn't that surprising either, but having an Aenar (played by a legally blind actor to boot) and an apparent descendant or relative of Khan in the cast caught me off guard. Even though I'm in a definite minority with this, I've always loved when an installment of a franchise was chock-full of internal references and callbacks, small universe be damned. You can start throwing rotten vegetables at me now.
The bottom line is, I'm not usually a huge fan of episodic series, but this looks very, very good for me. I can't wait.

She could be first officer by season 3.
Which is exactly why the format doesn't matter. Serialized or episodic, bad writing is bad writing.
And if you think they're not going to shoehorn in a bunch "continuity" stuff into this, I think you'll be disappointed.
