I'm going to bet they fixed the asymmetrical collars, probably simplified the piping too. The first change makes them look better and the second makes them cheaper to produce.

 

I'd just as soon do away with the piping and zipper altogether and make them pullover tunics but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what's in store.

Yes, that is a really cool piece of lost history right there.

 

I noticed Captain Carol Freeman on LD has what looks like a Starfleet Academy service cap on her display shelf in her Ready Room, so that might be a play off both the Pike hat from "The Cage(TOS)" and the Starfleet caps worn in the Kelvin Timeline as part of cadet and dress uniforms.

It's because Abrams is a clueless hedonistic hack who didn't understand the proper way to use the hats. Just look at all the scenes in his movies with hats. Despicable. I have spoken. So say we all.

 

It was more the amount of hat flares he had in the movies.
