I'll give Anson Mount the benefit of the doubt at this point in the game. I don't think I've seen the man give a bad performance or go to bat for a project he didn't think would be good.

I'd be much more leery if this had been Kurtzman or Goldsmith or someone else behind the scenes who had been with the franchise going back to Discovery season one.

 

Oh, Kurtzman and Mount are fine by me. Goldsmith I couldn't care less about in terms of good or bad. Decidedly neutral on him. And no doubt it will go better once released. I'm sure Strange New Worlds will be fine. But, it's the "old school fans" and posting random pictures as if that's supposed to make us happy attitude that strikes me as odd.

But, I'm definitely becoming an old fuddy-duddy when it comes to stuff like this. Random bits of tawdry fan service are not interesting.

 

I'm an old man shaking his fists at clouds at this point in my life. But I'll at least wait until the trailers start before declaring my hatred of SNW.

 

Hatred is too much work right now. I'd have to take a morning and afternoon nap if I did!

 

I'm as old as school as you get (and I do get that they want to update for the 21st century as far as overall set design etc.) I thought the Discovery version of the USS Enterprise was generally okay although I hated both the swept back aspect and the split aspect of the nacelle struts. I really wish at least they had stuck with the design shown in the orthos of the discovery scanner interface display which just had the straight-up struts with the split. I'll never understand why they think the exterior design of the original 1701 needs to be redone - Even people like Neil deGrasse Tyson feel it's a great design for an interstellar starship.

The above said with respect to the plaque I do like how it splits the difference in that it both says starship class (with a colon), and then Constitution class. Yes the Constitution class designation was added in the Franz Joseph Star Trek technical manual circa 1974 and appears to have been adopted as the ship's class since the TOS feature film era; so I think the updated bronze plaque does serve to integrate both aspects in a good way.

It's a tradeoff. We get some fan service so that a balance is struck between the "everything new SUCKS" crowd of grumps and the "if it's even remotely like TOS it's hokey and won't get a modern audience" drumbeaters who think everything needs to be new and "fresh."

 

As in many things in life it is a balance.

 

I wish the fandom would learn that. We're always stuck between the people who hate everything because it's new and the people who hate something because it reminds them of something old.

 

All same. Overall I like the modern shows and think they're pretty good at standing apart from one another. I've just longed for a return to the episodic format and so far, the things being said about Strange New Worlds are all the right things for me. It's one of the many reasons I like Lower Decks so much.

I'm exhausted by the season long story arcs, in general.

 

Constitution class name was originally created for the show. It appears on a computer graphic that isn't readble on screen. It's also mentioned in the script for Space Seed

 

And they likely just kept the bridge dedication plaque from "WNMHGB" just to save money, so "Starship Class" just found its way into the lexicon and even in ENT the 22nd Century NX-01 was called a "Spacecraft" and not given a class designation on its dedication plaque nor called a "Starship" except in dialogue.

 

Enterprise season 4 had the Defiant's plaque say 'Constitution class'

ST09 kept Starship Class.

Theoretically, when story would be everything that it is about. Maybe you can call it confounding factors, but for me, there are many other aspects, that also have some importance for me. And I dön't nessecarily mean things like the production value, but also the way, a story is presented during the season.

For example: While I am a huge fans of series with an ongoing story arc like 'Babylon 5', I have a little problem with many serials: They start with their arc too immediately, for me often way too soon. I just prefer one season like Babylon 5's first season or DS9's first seasons. In this case, it's not just how good and stronmg the arc is but also the time it gets to be developed during the episodes.

 

I think that's just (a part of) the online bubble. I bet most viewers - fans or casual - judge the series by their stories or whatever they perceive as merits, but not by a prop being a reminiscence of older shows, or lack of said reminisccences...

I agree. Give the character and world building some time. BUT, I think that's much harder to do with 10 episode seasons...

 

I love ongoing arcs. They can meander but that's the nature of the story for me.

 

They've said SNW will be a planet of the week type deal, but there will be character development kept between episodes, they won't be completely self contained.

 

Which is ideal for me. Just make it so stuff matters.

 

While Babylon 5 was always planned as an epic, my impression is that Deep Space Nine was intended to be episodic as in early seasons, until declining ratings mandated a change in direction, hence the Defiant, Worf and a big war story.
