... or, conversely, it would turn out that Discovery actually is unequipped for the adequate containment of the spores from the drive, and all of the ship's air filtration systems have been completely saturated by them. We're still back in Context is for Kings, and everybody's been tripping their brains out ever since. Come to think of it, it would even explain the disappearing crew members people were complaining about in Season 1 .

 

Or even better, Notch it up a level do A Star Trek meets Altered States season.

Frankly, this is the most plausible explanation for the events depicted in this series.

I just had a thought:

Why did the Discovery need a crew to take it into the future?

The sphere data is sentient, it can operate the ship on its own, so why can't it pilot itself?

 

I watched this show and in doing so understand a) the previous Captain specifically put together a crew that wouldn't abandon one of their number even in extreme circumstances. this was proven time and time again this past season that again, when the going gets tough the crew of discoveries knee jerk reaction isn't saying, "You know I've got a cushy and safe job here, and someone suggests I might upset that nice applecart by supporting a fellow crew member who's risking their life all alone alone? Bye Bye whoever you are."

I find it hilarious, after watching Star Trek for decades that Star Trek crews are willing to take incredible risks for each other and don't abandon each other at the drop of a hat, the most recent show where the crew not only does this, but we are shown specifically why they do this, is treated like this is aberrant behavior for both a Star Trek ship's crew or a Star Trek show in general. Weird.

 

Another point about the sphere data: If it's intelligent enough to take over the ship, couldn't it be reasoned with somehow? Perhaps even delete itself from Discovery in order to make Control's' search futile?

 

Since it is from the future it learned how to combat the "Kirk Maneuver" of destroying artificial entities.

 

They already showed (on Voyager) that you can reason with smart bombs, so why not?

 

The Sphere data may not have taken abandonment lightly and refused to go without company.

Cutting the impulse engines mid ascent would have put a dent in their plans.

 

But like I said, the sphere data is sentient. It could have been reasoned with. Nobody ever thought of trying to talk to it? Maybe it could have been convinced to sacrifice itself for the good of all. Or at least to encrypt itself so Control couldn't use it.
