Liked this episode, gave it an 8.

The thing that stood out to me the most, was the 'dig' Tyler gave to Pike at the end ...

"...Those of US, who fought in the war..."

You could tell by Pikes face that really hit home.
Not a very beneficial way to stay in good graces with the Captain of the ship.
:shifty:

Like many others, I hated Tyler in this episode. I mean, I can buy that he begrudgingly accepted working for Section 31 because he had nowhere else to go. But in this episode he talks like a true believer in the cause, which seems...out of place...considering he hasn't had all that much time to process things.

It's just poor writing, and worse characterization.

Banned without even clarifying what he meant by "downloading". I guess today word download can't even be said, even with perfectly legal meaning.

He was kicked off for a day because of a history of talking about illegal downloading. A little too jumpy, I think, as he didn't get a chance to explain, but we're not allowed to publicly talk about moderator actions here.

I wish they could just be done with those personal dramas. This is science fiction, not a soap opera. Tell us science fiction stories.

They're doing both well. Most of this ep was Saru's personal drama, but it advanced the science fictiony aspects of the overall plot.

This was a great payoff episode for how I felt about the Short Trek, where I wished there had more to that story. The bulk of it felt really, really well paced where you had time to let the characters have their emotions and reactions in tandem with beautifully done action sequences that weren't really action sequences, very appropriate for an episode where the solution, when all it seems like you can do is fight, is to not fight... and then an angel appears, I guess.

In seriousness, though, Doug Jones must never leave this series. He gives so much life and heart to Saru, and can convey so much through that rubber face and gangly arms. Opening the episode with what I imagine was a First Officer's Personal log was a welcome change, and I hope we get more and more monologues from the other characters. Moar monologues, I say! More!

Was off-put by how oblivious Stamets was to Culber's obvious distress, but that's all built into Culber's distress arc I guess. It was still uncomfortable and seemed out of character; I feel like Stamets would be much more sensitive to that. Or would he? Maybe not like season 1a Stamets, but post-mycelial Stamets was so in tune with others' feelings I felt that this was very ugly for him, even if he's giddy Hugh's back.

I would have given this episode a 10 if they hadn't gone and made Ash an insufferable dick.

I remember someone (can't recall who, but genius!) hypothesizing in the Obol for Charon thread that the data from the sphere could be where Starfleet gets a lot of its random information from that we see in later series, and I thought I'd mention it again here if someone else hasn't already. Anyway, seems super plausible, all those times Data would talk about some ancient civilization on this rando planet that had 27 dynasties across 3 continents and have been extinct for 483 thousand years and such. And given that it seems to just be straight, raw, statistical data it's not crazy that they'd be studying it for a long ass time. It's not just cataloguing or searching like Airiam but also analyzing and inferring meaning through the data like Tilly and Michael.

Great episode.

It was pretty much all good, funny to see Saru struggling with the changes early in the episode and Pikes response.

It wouldn't surprise me if Spock is the Red Angel, it was a future version of himself that he saw all those years ago and it would explain his psychological issues as Vulcans have trouble believing in time travel.

No surprise that some still have PTSD from the Klingon War, that goes double for Tyler with what he has been through, I think Pike was so affected by being ordered to stay out of it that he failed to consider the affect it had on those who were a part of it.

Which is a perfectly understandable human reaction on both sides.

Solid 9/10 from me.

He's not "banned." The moderator has explained his actions in past posts and has requested PMs if there are concerns.

Just friendly advice here.

Which could be a part of it. Voq was shown to be a lost sheep, as it were, an outcast among his own people, who threw in behind T'Kumva to build himself up. Now, he has another man's memories layered on top of his own, and he already has self-image issues.

I think the lack of processing makes perfect sense to the character's presentation.

No one has been banned. They're just off for a day due to a second warning. It's automatic. And the poster in question was previously given an infraction for mentioning illegally downloading the short trek episodes after prior to that being told not to advocate piracy in another incident, so it's a whole chain of events. As I told the other poster, if he contacts me and says that he downloaded this episode legally, I will gladly reverse the warning, but given his track record for mentioning illegal downloading outside of CBSAA and Netflix, he needs to be mindful of what he says here.

I hope you're never on my jury if I say " i took money from the bank". You'd assume I robbed the bank when I meant I made withdrawl.

He's wearing a combadge (the first combadge!), that I assume is actively recording everything that Tyler sees and hears. I assume that Tyler specifically was placed on the ship (and recruited?) because of his ties to Michael and the Discovery.

I keep trying to go over the timeline, and judging from Linus's statement a couple eps ago, it's only been a few weeks since Pike took over. Tyler shouldn't be drinking the 31 kool-aid so soon, but he is a "misfit", so psychologically might feel that this rogue, vaguely Starfleet spy agency is the only place he belongs.

A more seasoned agent might sit back and calmly sip his tea while collecting intel, instead of going into paranoia overdrive regarding the Red Angel as a potential threat.

I hope they do more with Tyler than just have him as the antagonistic, incorrect liaison. And I'm sure they will. Having Culber onboard, going through his own existential crisis, will help.

I had assumed, wrongly, that the show was moving him into Section 31 so he could play a black ops Boba Fett — to perform missions that are officially disavowed by Starfleet. Even trusting him to act on behalf of the Federation in that role is silly, but putting him back into a Starfleet uniform on a top-secret ship to argue with the captain just beggars belief.

Yep. I keep asking myself "why is he still here?" and I feel bad for it because I really like Shazad Latif the actor, just not Tyler/Voq the character.

He's doing his job. And he's pointing out why. I recall Spock performing a similar role in TOS, such as telling Kirk he was going to have to kill Gary Mitchell in Where No Man Has Gone Before.

He has a job to do. And he's doing it. And its important to the narrative. And Star Trek has had plenty of characters in the past who performed the same narrative duties, for again, the same useful narrative reasons. Its a bit odd to be watching a show that's asking a the audience to examine what they are watching, and to get a response back, "but I shouldn't have to."

They’re so panicked they decide to post a known Klingon spy (who is wearing a human skin suit) to the Federation’s top secret spore drive ship?

The Section 31 stuff is so silly I can’t get past it.
He's not a Klingon spy anymore, he hasn't been since L'Rell purged Voq's personality in Season 1.

Voq is the Klingon dude from S1 who got himself folded, spindled and mutilated into the form of Ash Tyler. Saru's race are called Kelpians.

Kelpiens actually ;)
