I loved loved loved that! 10. I think Saru has firmly enshrined himself as my favourite character, and I appreciated that they followed up on the new facets of his and his species' new way of living.

The Ba'ul at the end looked a little bit like Armus, but it was nothing like him in every other way I can imagine.

The screen popped in this episode for me. The location scenes were very lavish - the homeworld was truly alien.

I gave this one an 8, but a very strong eight. Last week's was a 9 and this one was a half a step or behind that one.

Very strong story. Great reunion with his sister and exploration of his people, the Baul, and the Balance. You got a sense of how their world worked under the Watchful Eye. The relationship between Saru and his sister felt realistic. Both her elation at seeing him again and the "long conversation" about difficult things that was going to be needed.

A couple of issues held this story back. For one thing, the info dump from the sphere to supply the answer was a bit too convenient. Of course, it might be revealed that the Red Angel was pulling the strings. Even if that's the case, it makes things a bit too easy to suddenly have the answer to the true nature of Kelpiens.

Additionally, it was extremely reckless for Pike to trigger the evolution of all Kelpians. We saw the trauma it caused Saru, now imagine it on a global scale. And, talk about upsetting the power balance. That usually has unexpected consequences (see our own interventions here on Earth on a smaller scale), and now magnify that many times. The upheaval and ramifications would huge, but they were swept under the rug. The ending was a bit to pat and simple. And, Pike had no plan for handling that chaos that was undoubtedly going to ensue!

Having the Red Angel guide Discovery to catastrophes in the making is a cool device. But having it make the resolution easy reduces the drama.

That all said, it was a strong story that was entertaining.

Stamets is part tardigrade. Of course his empathy mechanisms are a bit off.

I think that upsetting the power balance of a planet was a very TOS-ish thing to do.

As for the Ba'ul's appearance and slime layer... notice that they live in the water. Their design makes sense for sea creatures. And as an ardent seafood lover, I can see how the Kelpians would find their deliciousness so irresistibly appetizing in the first place.

I download and watch on Netflix in the UK, has someone been incorrectly banned?
No one has been banned. They're just off for a day due to a second warning. It's automatic. And the poster in question was previously given an infraction for mentioning illegally downloading the short trek episodes after prior to that being told not to advocate piracy in another incident, so it's a whole chain of events. As I told the other poster, if he contacts me and says that he downloaded this episode legally, I will gladly reverse the warning, but given his track record for mentioning illegal downloading outside of CBSAA and Netflix, he needs to be mindful of what he says here.

Loved the episode!! Loved the Ba’ul look..! My only complaint is that it felt like a ‘hightlights reel’ from a two-part episode, but apart from that: this season is a dream come true...

This one gets a 9 from me. Really enjoyed seeing Kaminar again, and getting a bit more detailed information on how things work between the Kelpiens and the Ba'ul.
The Ba'ul was seriously creepy, my first though when it rose out of the water was of Armus, but once things got going it was very different.
The whole reveal that the Kelpiens used to be the predators of the Ba'ul was a bit surprise for me.
The Red Angel saving the Kelpiens was an interesting twist, and the reveal that it appears to be a humanoid in a suit is a big surprise. It seems to me like it might be someone from the future manipulating the timeline for some reason. So the question is, is it good or bad manipulation.
Evolved Saru is a bad ass.
I really hope we return to Kaminar at some point, they just caused a massive shift in the way things work on the planet, and it would be nice to see how things go.
I'm glad that Culber's return is having a lasting effect on him.

Voice overs, spore gainz, bathrobes, slime monsters, face darts, superSaru, genocide, angelus ex machina, and Future Guy 2 - oh my!

Enjoyed this one - a fairly simple story but well executed, suspenseful, entertaining, and with good performances from Jones and Mount.
Glad to be back on the red angel bandwagon.
Nice acknowledgment that Culber has a lot to deal with, although this as a 'B' story faded very much into the background. There was only one story here, and the episode didn't hold back on telling it.

Overall, a 7.

I feel a bit different about this - now Trek is serial, it's great to see technology that is discovered and not instantly forgotten.

In previous series, we could come some wonderful technology that the characters would rave about and then they would warp and we'd never see or hear about it again.

I really liked "The Sound of Thunder" and gave it an "8."

First off "Sound of Thunder" caused me to rethink my objection to the resurrection of Dr. Culber as I strongly believe that at some point this series must establish that death means something or they'll lose a big element of drama as well as credibility. In this episode they shown that Culber is back but not quite right so they may show there is a cost associated to his return. If they develop that premise well then I shall withdraw my objection.

I like this development of Saru and The Kelpians [correction]. The Red Angel is starting to strike me as Babylon-5ish (but we'll see). Could The Kelpians become a warrior race? Can they master their inner rage? I don't believe they will break the cycle. I'm feeling they'll became a cautionary tale and a tragic piece of Federation history. As for the Red Angel, I pray it is not future-Spock or Kirk or Riker (since Frakes has been directing episodes) or anyone else as that would really be a hack move since they have been trying to insinuate that element into Trek since Enterprise (possibly for the same reason … they can break away from canon by creating an alternate timeline ala The Flash and Flashpoint).

We got a pretty good dose of breadcrumbs though … FINALLY! Still think it is a funny bit of inconsistency between this episode and "New Eden" in terms of Captain Pike's attitude towards the inhabitants. Strikes me as the writers not all being on the same page so-to-speak.

That is a good example "deus ex machina." Unfortunately it has been a staple of the franchise since TNG.

They’re so panicked they decide to post a known Klingon spy (who is wearing a human skin suit) to the Federation’s top secret spore drive ship?

The Section 31 stuff is so silly I can’t get past it.

He's wearing a combadge (the first combadge!), that I assume is actively recording everything that Tyler sees and hears. I assume that Tyler specifically was placed on the ship (and recruited?) because of his ties to Michael and the Discovery.

I keep trying to go over the timeline, and judging from Linus's statement a couple eps ago, it's only been a few weeks since Pike took over. Tyler shouldn't be drinking the 31 kool-aid so soon, but he is a "misfit", so psychologically might feel that this rogue, vaguely Starfleet spy agency is the only place he belongs.

A more seasoned agent might sit back and calmly sip his tea while collecting intel, instead of going into paranoia overdrive regarding the Red Angel as a potential threat.

I hope they do more with Tyler than just have him as the antagonistic, incorrect liaison. And I'm sure they will. Having Culber onboard, going through his own existential crisis, will help.

I would normally just let this go with a verbal warning, but you already have a previous infraction for promoting piracy, so you should know better.

Infraction for promoting piracy. Comments to PM.

Banned without even clarifying what he meant by "downloading". I guess today word download can't even be said, even with perfectly legal meaning.
