Well, I think they had to come up with some explanation on why we never seem 'em in TOS, etc. It may not be the best of explanations, but I can live with it.
Doesn’t explain why all other TOS ships don’t have them, or future ships as well.

Quintessential Trek. Would've been a 10 but for some directorial issues, although there was a lot of content in that 50 minutes. One example was the everyone stand up one after the other as the doors close trope. The story was an absolute 11 though.

9.

A few "ehhhhh, let's just not" scenes but almost entirely entertaining and thrilling. A big improvement over last week.

Ron Moore has said that he intended, but intentionally did not specify, that the ancient aliens we saw in The Next Generation's The Chase were the Preservers.

It's a good thing he didn't put it in the episode because the timeline doesn't line up at all. The Preservers were active only a few thousand years ago, to be able to transplant Native Americans. The Progenitors were around before life on Earth left the ooze. Clearly different groups.

That actually seems like the kind of thing that would happen to a species like his once they've become a full adult,

I was reminded of the Salamanders who stay in their Larval form unless injected with iodine to cause them to mature into an adult. They even have external gills that look like threat ganglia.

Not the strongest episode of the season, but very watchable with plenty of character moments. I enjoyed the interplay between Stamets and Reno, and Tilly's reaction to their banter.

I didn't fully buy into the Saru dying ploy, but the scene was very well acted, and both Doug Jones and SMG showed off their chops.

Am I the only one wondering if the Kelpians and the Ba'ul are just different evolutionary stages of the same species? What happened to Saru might happen to all Kelpians after they vanish in that culling ceremony. Perhaps the Kelpians are the larval stage of the Ba'ul?

Hadn’t thought of that. You may be right.

Commander Nhan, sporting a very nice Disco dress: Section 31 double agent, spying on the Discovery.

I hope not. I'm sick of the double agent or sleeper agent trope. Disco used the sleeper agent last year. I'd hate to have the double agent one this season. Also it's a trope that needs to take a holiday for a while. Most genre shows post-9/11 cram one in.

I always suspected Tilly was a Space Oddity, thought. Tonight that supposition became a fact.

Hence the song was thematic to both the character and the plot. :)

Standardization of all Starfleet communications technology with that of the Enterprise, and once she became the most famous and celebrated starship in the Federation other vessels mimicked her systems?

Hey, I'm surprised nobody mentioned that Linus was front-and-center a couple of times tonight. I thought that was pretty cool

I did like that. In fact, I was surprised by how much I liked that whole conference room scene. The conference room was an overused staple of Berma-Trek, but it was nice to see all the bridge crew interacting somewhere other than the bridge.

It could have been a fad.
There could have been a weakness found in the technology. Maybe it requires much more power and bandwidth to transmit compared to standard 2D signals?
Maybe breaking the encryption on a Holo signal is easier due to a vulnerability in the format?
Lots of reasons.

So, they explain why viewscreens replace holographic communications, and also why the spore drive can never be used again in one episode. It was pretty slow, all things considered, and borrowed a lot from The Inner Light. On to next week to continue the Search for Spock...
