Folk in the Starfleet quote Peter Pan and John Masefield. They read Sherlock Holmes and Charlotte Brontë. They listen to Rachmaninoff and jazz. They play holonovels based upon Flash Gordon, James Bond, and Philip Marlowe knockoffs. The only thing different here is that the producers shelled out money for something under copyright instead of going the knockoff route.

I always suspected Tilly was a Space Oddity, thought. Tonight that supposition became a fact.

I think I missed a lot here. Sometimes the dialogue just flies. I feel like a bit of an idiot- but here it goes:

Why doesn't Saru have fear anymore? Were the ganglia literally causing the fear, and then the just fell off? That's weird.

Was Burnham cutting the ganglia going to kill him? Also odd.

The Enterprise malfunctioned because of holo-communicators?

That creature kidnapped Tilly to the spore network? Or the Upside Down? Huh?

Maybe I shouldn't be drinking my James T. Kirk bourbon during this show.

Nhan was wearing a skirt version of the standard DSC uniform.

Yeah, she was also wearing the skirt variation of the Enterprise uniform in "Brother." I have to give kudos to the costume designers into making them look practical as opposed to the goofy stuff in TOS (which I excuse for it being a product of its time) and the JJ-movies. Not too crazy about them, but they actually seem believable.

Did Pike call Airiam by a different name tonight?

Also, what's up with the random orange light shining through the windows the last two weeks? Or is that some kind of weird wall light fixture?

Reno is great - so long as the standup comedy bits are kept to the necessary minimum. She's definitely a lot of fun to watch and listen to.

It was really that well done.
This is shaping up to be the best season of Star Trek, ever.

Damn, you guys are making me want to go back and watch it again. I didn't like it that much. Maybe I just missed something.

Maybe it's because, for like the first time in over a year (and maybe the second time ever) my CBSAA performance was dog crap. Buffering, cut-outs, and bad picture resolution all episode. I was kinda pissed.

I've rarely had issues with CBSAA, but tonight the episode started at 8 minutes in and refused to load when I tried to watch from the beginning. Six tries across two devices...and I just gave up and watched on Amazon.

Two other thoughts:

Lee Rose did a nice job directing.

Even thought it was brief, this is the first time that we've seen the bridge crew gathered together in the Ready Room, spit-balling ideas. I LOVE this glimpse of them being the go-to people. They may not be our main cast, but they're still key players.

I got the impression that all Kelpians wind up getting harvested before their threat ganglia fall off naturally, so none of them ever knew that they can continue beyond that final supposed near-death “Vaharai” experience. They always thought it was their time to be harvested, and their “Ba’ul” predators exploited that, when it was really the next step in their developmental cycle. Saru is the first to experience his species’ true destiny. For all their fear, they are extremely physically strong and highly intelligent. The Ba’ul are likely afraid of what the Kelpians would become if they decided to no longer allowed themselves to be harvested. I detect a rogue mission back to Saru’s home world soon.

As for the other stuff, I’m not entirely sure myself, either.
