Spoilers Star Trek: Discovery 2x01 - "Brother"

I loved the re-design, so I agree there.

I think I view the language/subtitles through my wife's eyes, though...who fell asleep during one of T'kuvma's extended "Remain Klingon" soliloquies in the very first episode...despite being pretty charged up about being able to enjoy the moment with me.

 

It looked like George Jetsons flying car in suitcase, but I am thinking replicator tech was used to create the gravity simulator.

MY new headcanon: ships come out of construction yards with only minimal interior fittings and accommodations. There is LOTS of empty space which becomes filled with more equipment and crew as needed in future refits. I suspect the Enterprise under April had fewer crew members than now with Pike.

The Saurian understood what an asshole that guy was and let him know.

Like Saru, Saurians can sense the approach of death, and their culture says you should use those people as hankerchiefs because they're disposable.

Several Federation ships with large Saurian contingents actually suffered mass drownings during combat operations, so Starfleet started limiting them to one or two per ship, hence why we don't see them much in TNG.

 

The episode was a large improvement over the first season.

Excepting Burnham, who was just as much of a drag on the episode as she was the first season.

 

it's possible that species that might have language more hard coded into their brains might have one language or at least a general one with minor variations based on region, gender, caste, job, etc.

maybe earth is an outlier where language is concerned. There was a hypothesis I have read that the majority of languages may have developed for defensive reasons. The hunter gather group next door couldn't tell what you were saying. We have an innate ability to invent things and there wasn't much else to do for the first few hundred thousand years of being a homo sapien but to invent new languages.

esperanto is an invented language. languanges depart from the main one* like darwin's finches - through means of not meeting anyone else in your part of the woods.

the drive towards a planetary language comes through connections and short ways. in the 24th century french (or german for that matter) might indeed be obsolete, but so would picards british accent. kirk's terran won't really be the same as todays english or american english. it will have evolved fürther.

the problem is an alien planet with let's say a 1750ish society with only one language on said planet

I haven't used Esperanto in years. I took a couple of courses but forgot most of it. In terms of language on a planet wide basis, probably silly but less so than transporters or heisenberg compensators. Plains Sign Talk was used over a remarkably large area of North America by dozens of different language groups at a stone age level of technology in a way that kept commerce and trade going, for instance.

 

it's better to compare that to swahili (lt uhura, anyone?) than to esperanto - a bit of everything but not an invented language.

Because the Klingons in said scenes had problems speaking clearly to begin with, I can' fault the UT.

 

That was complete nonsense. They clearly spent a lot of money on it, but surprisingly the only bit of the episode that sparked my interest at all was the Burnham/Spock stuff.

 

I wanted to make a point here, but forgot what it was halfway through the first sentence. damn, that scotch is great...anyway...something about the ever changing lingua franca and I vaguely remember someting about Mandarin or Hindi as a strong contender...

 

they had? because I clearly remember thinking how the Klingons in S1 spoke the most accurate thlIngan'hol I've ever heard in a TV show

 

Look I know they tried, but between honestly them having to try and speak a completely made up language under all that latex, rubber, etc. <--- IMO It really affected their performance and not in a good way. I hope going forward, they go to the tried and true one or two sentences subtitled in Klingon and then they let the actors speak English for the remainder of the scene/ episode with the audience understanding it IS all in 'Klingon'.

 

the actress who played L'Rell did a pretty amazing job. Not every Klingon was on the same level, sure, but her performance alone was miles above everythig we had in 90s Trek.
And I wish I knew who I had to thank for finally getting the correct pronounciation of Khaless on screen, that name was butchered beyond believe in older iterations of the franchise.

Also: I really have no problem with subtitles. I mean, I can read.

 

A more enjoyable episode than any of season 1. Or all of season 1.

Two scenes made it clear that the makers realized they needed a reboot to engage the audience: when Pike asked the bridge crew to introduce themselves, and when he told Burnham they were going to have some fun along the way. No other reason to do that except to acknowledge it was missing from S1
