Eh, it's minor, and certainly nothing close a slip up they had in GENERATIONS.

Riker: That's a pretty big margin of error.
    Picard: Much too big.

I'm not much of a grammar nazi, but when someone says "I could care less" I start feeling like Hitler.

Seems to have been a controversy ( pronounce that as you will ;) ) on both sides of the Atlantic for a while

Honestly, the less we try to figure out language in the Trekverse the better. Imagining every other planet besides Earth has only one language makes my brain hurt.

It's almost as if it's not a realistic depiction of how interstellar communications would work... almost as if Star Trek is all just an allegory of our own world...

Solid 8.0. I found "Brother" to be very entertaining! This is more like it; the way I wish the series had felt from the beginning. I am eagerly looking forward to the next episode.

It would get really really tired if every single first-contact scenario turned out to be Darmok after all.

There are some cool ways they could have used the universal translator in plots they didn't however. Like a crew visits a planet where there are different languages spoken according to caste. When they come down the UT inadvertently translates between languages for the first time, leading people to discover what the other side was saying.

Just watched it and forgive me but I really have no time to read 55 pages of comments..
    so..
fact 1: I HATED SEASON 1 with a passion and I had decided to give the show a 2nd chance for 1-2 episodes top before abandon it
fact 2: If season 2 premiere is any indication of what will follow, I have already erased season 1 's existence from my mind. For me STD 1st season NEVER HAPPENED! Long live DSC season 2!!
fact 3: I really liked this! I only gave it 7 cause I am still a bit afraid they gonna mess up..
fact (?) 4: I think they are reading us lol, well at least the ones complaining about season 1.
It was so obvious at some moments, especially when they had Pike asking the crew to introduce themselves and made them a bit less a part of the decoration they were in the first season.

    Some more observations:
I do not like the whole "Michael knows everything", "can achieve everything", the Mary Sue in space, yadda yadda yadda. She is still the weakest part of the show, however she is not as bad as in 1st season.
    Pike was great.
    Saru is still the best.
Tilly is still annoying, even if a bit less than last year.

Please please please Discovery.. be as good for the rest of the season, please please don't ruin this really good start! Wow I am ST giddy for the first time after a looong time :) :) :)

    p.s.
What where they thinking with the season one stories? Did I tell you I hated it? :D

I don't see anything wrong there, but then English isn't my first language. What have I missed?

I have a pet peeve about the absurdity of the universal translator.

I’m fine with the general idea of it; sure, it’s a bit out there, but I can go with it.

However, what does bother me is how does it work when our heroes are trying to hide among an unsuspecting population and pass themselves off as one of them? I get it that that words are changed, but don’t these aliens notice that our heroes mouths aren’t moving to those words?

I suspect it would look like a foreign movie that was dubbed.

    /end pet peeve rant

That's kind of an odd reason to pull an actor from a role, isn't it? ("Sorry, Sara, you're too pretty to play Airiam, so we've got this other human officer you can play.") Especially when the new Airiam is pretty easy on the eyes as well.

Pike: Sound off. And skip your ranks. They don't matter.
    Airiam: Lieutenant Commander Airiam.
Airiam is now my favorite character.
