So it seems IGN are reporting as fact, the next new Star Trek series will be Animated by CBS Eye Productions, and will be called Lower Decks.

Mike McMahan a Writer and Exec Producer from Rick and Morty will be overseeing the show. He also runs the unofficial TNG Series 8 twitter account, which landed him a book deal.

"I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed"

"I promise not to add an episode at the very end that reveals the whole thing took place in a training program."

    I already like this guy.

It would likely be a hard pass from me, except my wife and eleven year old son love Rick and Morty.

So, most importantly, will this be on Netflix outside of the US and Canada?

Huh. That's not a direction I would have predicted. Curious to see how this turns out.

It's interesting how any association with Rick & Morty is such an overwhelming negative for me at this point. Irrationally, I didn't feel optimistic when I saw that as the credit. That fanbase is so toxic. It's the only artistic property I can think of where it is the fans, rather than something in the property itself, that turned me off from it.

I recall searching it once on Tumblr and getting a wall of grotesque pedophillic incest. Then I saw the original Doc & Morty short and that was disgusting too.

But Rick and Morty proper is awesome.

Now that this has sunk in..... this could be really really cool, especially if this guy knows Trek. I look forward to some DS9 jokes. :)

I did suggest some time back, that the universe is big enough to have a sitcom, set in Starfleet, about a less important crew on a ship - and it is essentially what The Orville did.

Doing this as the animation makes sense in that animated comedy does well in the US etc - but allows diversity and crazy things to happen, without needing a crazy budget (at least compared to a live action sitcom).

And allows the live action shows to take a more serious tone of story telling. And with the different shows, each could focus on particular stories. So The Picard Show could be more political and grounded than Discovery which is focused on exploration and ship based stories, while the Academy show would be a younger audience telling stories about cadets and wannabe officers.

Keeping each show fresh and focused offering different takes on the universe.

An animated Star Trek comedy... Hmm.. Not sure what to think about that. Maybe it'll chronicle the further adventures of the night crew:

I think, as long as the universe and setting is not the butt of any joke, and the way the world works is true to canon. Lots of weird things can happen to the crew, and they can find these things ridiculous and lament/be proud of their positions in Starfleet and on board this kinda inconsequential ship.

I mean, think of how boring studying gaseous anomalies would be for months on end, or transferring cargo back and forth - how would a slightly bored and disinterested crew amuse themselves?

I think the news articles give a sense of what it's going to be like. It's going to make fun of Star Trek tropes, we'll probably see red shirt gags and such.
